Turning the Laptop 12 into the Tablet 12

This is an idea I had after seeing the CAD for the Laptop 12 motherboard on printables and then looking into the Laptop 12 and realizing it has a stylus. I started looking around to see if anyone else had done something similar and only found designs for the Laptop 13 (because everyone else is just flipping the screen and using it that way) However I personally have enjoyed the tablet form factor more and have been finding myself limited by both Android and ARM. So, I figured I could take the parts of the laptop and put together a new shell that has the screen and mother board in one case in order to get that Tablet experience I prefer while maintaining the capabilities of a x86 system running windows.

Currently this I what I have, I’ve still got a lot of work left and I know that some of my dimensions are not correct as I don’t have Items like a back cover or front cover, the Display, or the antenna’s so I have a bunch of mounting holes that need work. I’m also looking to make the Tablet 12 be able to mount the fingerprint sensor board so that it can operate even more like a tablet. I’ve got the STEP file for a pretty up to date design available on my printables page (Link to model), but I don’t know how often I’m going to update it. I’ll try to update this topic page with updates when I have them as well.

Any advice, Dimensions, Notes, or even thoughts would be appreciated

Description of project from printables (Link to Model)

This design turns the individual parts of the Framework laptop 12 into a tablet, giving you x86 processes, stylus support, and multiple ports in a tablet form factor.  This was done through using the CAD models provided by framework for the laptop 12 and using image measuring to get some dimensions. Some dimensions may be off as I don't have good dimensions for the display and no dimensions for the Audio board, Fingerprint Board, or Speakers. However, I will be updating these dimensions as I get parts or get given dimensions by others 

Hardware Needed

M2 x 3.3 x 3 Heatsets (11 Needed)

M3 x 5 x 4 Heatsets (6 Needed Currently)

M3x6 or M3x8 FHCS (6 Needed Currently)

Hot Glue (to assist in attaching Display at current)

4x Expansion Cards

1x Antenna Kit

1x Fingerprint sensor

Update (9/17/2026): Added a power button on the back so that it can be turned on and off till the Fingerprint sensor can be mounted

Upload (9/17/2026): Currently this is a work in progress. I'm designing it so that those with 256mm^3 beds can print it (X1/X2/P1/P2/CC/CC2) however the currently uploaded model does not have the features to connect the individual parts and I'm going to be ordering a test version of it as a single part body instead of the multi-piece construction. Currently this model is missing

I have no advice but this is wicked cool!

Would be super neat if you could figure out how to integrate a slot for the stylus to be stored.
I imagine this would make the 12 a lot more portable in general which would be awesome! Especially as someone who uses it a lot in tablet mode.

I’m gonna be honest with one of the reasons I started this design being that I wanted to use the stylus I’m kinda annoyed that I forgot about this for the 8 hours I’ve spent in CAD so far. I could probably fit it here though

It would probably end up being a divot that the stylus magneticly attaches into with a finger cutout for removing it.

Thanks for reminding me I wanted to do that!

The magnetic attachment makes a lot of sense! Would feel more like an iPad.

I’d personally love to use something like this. I only wish the virtual keyboard on fedora was reliable enough to justify only using the screen as input.

This is super impressive, and it makes sense as a way to make the 12 more portable if you just want tablet mode!

Based on the CAD pictures you do not have an intake for the fan available. The 12 brings air in from the right of the exhaust port. Cool idea though!

Another thought would be to reuse the original back cover as that would add a lot of sturdiness that is probably hard to reach with a 3d print.

You cant see it in the two pictures in the post but I’ve got a back panel that covers the electronics and that has a fan grill in it for the air intake

I decided not to go with that (it was my first idea) as it would make it difficult to access the mainboard and battery for any repairs or upgrades. Plus I’m planning on getting it printed out of ABS-GF for stiffness for the first test models I print and when I make a final version it’s gonna be SLS printed which will give it improved stiffness and thermal deflection.
