It isn’t too bad with a heatgun. I removed my SSDs/RAM/battery and went at it until the ends of the heat pipes were hot but not absolutely burning and kept it there for a bit. There are some people in this thread that were just running stress tests and yanking the cooler off of the running CPU which seems crazy to me. As long as you are lifting at the square support section around the actual CPU it should be fine, but I can see people trying to lift on the heat pipes themselves thinking it will give them leverage when they will bend before that TIM gives up if it is still solid.
i’m familiar with the concept, just haven’t had to deal with it in person, because generally i don’t do overclocking, or otherwise have a reason to need that kind of heat transfer. with luck my fw16 will be the last time i have to.
yeah, i figured a heat gun would be involved… i actually own one, but the project i got it for didn’t pan out so it hasn’t even been removed from the packaging
Any good sources of genuine PTM in the UK? and what size shims?
Just request it from framework themselves:
I have but there isn’t any eta other than early 2025. And I’m getting bored of hearing fan noise.
Amazon → Thermal Grizzly Phasesheet and 20x20x0,8mm Shims
Thanks. TG phasesheet is like 3 weeks even on Amazon, going to try some ptm7950 for now
The Amazon PTM7950 is not genuine PTM7950 its mostly rebranded PCM6000 (cheaper and just different stuff but looks nearly like PTM) but priced like PTM. TG Phasesheet can be trusted to be the Genuine Stuff eith the right performance.
Ok, found some TG from a UK vendor that doesn’t have a terrible lead time
Has anyone got to the point where their Framework16 just suddenly powers off? Mine has started doing that when I am compiling software. Fans still ramp up to max like they always do and cpu shows a steady 100C temp.
Has Framework support gotten any better? When I went to them with my temp and performance issues a month ago, all they want to do was make me run the same tests over and over again. After like the 4th time sending them screenshots, they asked me to install a fresh OS or run from a live usb drive and I just said forget it at that point. I’m not wiping out my install or finding another nvme to throw in there just to test a thermal problem. They were pretty ridiculous acting like there is no problem.
Anyway, I am going to get after them again now that the holiday business is over. But have they resolved it yet? From the last few chats in here it appears not as people are doing it themselves.
It is probably the chip protection mechanism for overheating causing it to shutdown.
You could ask for a RMA or ask for the liquid metal replacement for PTM7950.
Note: I modded my heatsink and replaced the TIM. (Shim sandwich). Mine doesn’t even reach 100c anymore at max performance.
How did you do your mod? I am a little reluctant to try myself because if I damage my machine i won’t be able to do work. I am hoping Framework will provide step by step instructions when they release the fix.
The same way as the mod i established and showed here often i already did multiple step by step guides in this Thread here including partslists.

?
theres also this thread - [GUIDE] Liquid metal removal & PTM usage
I had roughly the same experience for roughly the month of November 2024. After the Live USB testing, I eventually got escalated through to Matt Hartley and then to engineering, so, the support script still didn’t know about liquid metal distribution issues by then. I wonder if you’ve got definitely the same issue as everyone else.
oof soooo i didnt think my thermals where tooo bad till i looked at this post…here is my full run of cine23.
i have already signed up for the ptm from framework for the record i got 13406 on the R7-7840HS running on a 130W Dell AC adapter.
Did your Sandwich, works great.
Win 11 / 24H2 / Balanced Mode
Cinebench 23 - 15800-16200 pts. (~11300 before)
50W continuous @ ~92°C (±3°C core difference)
Me need the sandwich
Holidays, family, work, etc. I’ve been too busy to mess with the thermals on the FW16. Hopefully, that will change soon. I have some PTM 7950, some shims, and a replacement heatsink to play around with. I just have to get the time to mess with it. It sounds like more people are doing these mods and having good luck. I’ll still update with my results when I get this done.
In the meantime, I just want to express my thanks and appreciation for those who have tinkered, experimented and shared their fixes and results. This is a great community!
same, got the shims and thermal grizzly just not had a few hours spare to rip it apart
