Updating to Fedora 42

So Fedora 42 Beta is released. In preperation for it’s final release in Apr/May I download it and installed it in a VM (boxes). Everything I care about seems to work just fine with the exception of Proton VPN. Proton says they won’t have a supported VPN product out until F42 is released. No mention of how long that might take.

Now I’m curious about my Framework 13–Intel Core Ultra Series 1, Intel® Core™ Ultra 5 125H. Any idea how long after F42 release can we expect the FW13 to be officially supported?

Also, for the curious, I setup F41 in a VM (boxes), then ran the command line update procedure. Everything worked just fine. Hope everything will work just as well on “real HW” when final bits are available.

Hi,
the best thing you can do is to sit patiently, wait for the final release of Fedora 42, then wait another month or two and then safely upgrade to the new release.

Gosh, by the time all that happens Fedora 43 will hit beta! :joy:

Unless you are on Silverblue or a similar immutable distro where you can simply rebase, I would not use Beta on a machine you need until at least a month has passed by, and none of the blocker bugs apply to you and your hardware.

Exactly. Hence the reason I loaded F42 Beta into a VM to check it out.

VM and hardware are very different animals. VMs are often much more forgiving.

I recently rebased to Fedora Silverblue 42 Beta on my AMD Framework 13, and it works very well, there’s even barely a noticeable difference, except that the settings menu contains some additional options and that the GDM login screen seems to be rendered a little bit larger for some reason.

Yes indeed. But recall what I said “In preperation for …”. This is only the first of several steps to get ready That said my post is intended to be more about when things are happening, not a how to do it dialog.

A month or two is a little carried away. Once all the repos you are using are upgraded to Fedora 42, you should be fine to upgrade.
