Upgradability of a Framework Laptop 13 DIY Edition (11th Gen Intel® Core™) to a future apu (AMD Strix point)

Heya everyone,

Total noob here that’s thinking about getting the Framework Laptop 13 intel 11th gen for work. But I’d like to upgrade it to the upcoming APUs ( LNL or Strix) whenever they come out.

That’s totally possible right?

That’s the idea, and it’s carried over to the 12th gen Intel, the 13th gen Intel, the AMD 7040, and now the Intel Core Ultra 1.

As to whether these specific CPUs will be available, Framework does not discuss future plans.

Today we only could say that it is possible with the existing mainboards.

I am in a similar situation and would update to Strix Point or Core Ultra 200.
Ram must be switched, it is different.
I think about selling the old system, after getting the new one. When I add the new screen, hinches, speaker, webcam and Display cover to the mainboard it could make sense to think about this.

While Framework doesn’t announce much about future plans, they did announce early on that this was their intention - to have replaceable mainboards that fit with the established case and have connections to the established peripherals. If they broke this, they’d have a lot of existing customers with incompatible laptops and wouldn’t be able to sell any mainboards. It would be the “end of the road” for all their existing customers. But they haven’t and their track record proves that.

Yes, RAM has changed out of necessity but they stuck with DDR4 as long as they could. On Intel 13th gen DDR4 was optional and this is what they went with to ensure compatibility. On the AMD 7040s and the Intel Core Ultra 1, DDR5 is mandatory so they had no choice.

But Dindi47 asked for upcoming APUs

RAM must be changed and nobody could say which TLD they use. So nobody could say if the Case fit.
Yes Framework did as much as they could do.
