I have read some USB4 specification details here but cannot find confirmation for my question: I use a couple of external monitors which only work via USB-C. They are powered by USB-C and get video pass through signal from USB-C. Does anybody know if the framework desktop will enable this via USB-C ?
What do you mean with “video pass through signal from USB-C”? Do you just mean DP Alt mode? How you would get DP signals through a USB-C port (without tunneling it through a USB4 or TB3 connection).
Every USB4 DFP port, including the ones on the FW Desktop support DP Alt mode output.
The front ports will not, also because the CPU is running out of video sources. Presumably, because there are only 5 ports total that do provide some kind of video. 1 used used in notebook for the integrated display (usually eDP), the 2 USB4 ports that by definition also do DP Alt mode, and 2 more, which for the newest FW13 uses for the 2 non-USB4 USB-C ports to have DP Alt mode and the FW Desktop uses for the native DP outputs.
Yes. it will.
in fact i need to, becuase there are fewer DisplayPort and HDMI ports than supported displays.
So no worries about getting video out out of one or both of rear the USB-C ports. I don’t see any explicit specs on how much poert they provide, but i would expect it to be at least enough to power the monitor. those usually will do at least 15 watts for downstream power.
Thanks for the reply. I do not know the exact technical terms. Let me say it this way, I want to see the video signal on my monitor which is connected via USB-C and I know that not every PC’s USB-C can handle this.
Thanks.
