What are you all doing with the PCIE slot?

I have used them in the past with good success but I need my unit to test the gen4 speeds.

I’m planning to do the same but w/ NixOS. ZFS RAIDZ1. Curious if you’ve tried with Linux at all and which pcie adapters would you recommend?

Does this fit?

My cem to m.2 works but the light on it is mega annoying. I will work on getting it speed tested and the damn light removed.

That sounds positive, which model did you go with and which distro?

I have the 128gb model and I tested the cem to m.2 and get every bit of gen 4 speeds. I currently have win11 and will toss cachy os on it some time in the next week or so.

Nice. Yeah when I run Windows, everything works totally fine with the PCIe to NVMe adapters I’ve purchased. Even in x4 mode. Soon as I switch to Proxmox I have the issues. I’ve reached the end of my debugging knowledge for linux though, not sure what to do next.

Do you mind sharing which one you’re using that works with Windows? Your post mentioned you tried three but wasn’t sure which one you settled on. Sorry if I missed it.

Sure, all three of these work equally well in Windows for me. I decided to keep running with option 1. Also FYI most of these devices have annoying LEDs on them too. It’s only really a thing you notice if you have the clear side panel.

Also to make these fit I had to remove the heat sinks or pci brackets.

I’ll probably add a high memory RDNA 5 gpu over oculink when they get released.

Does it fit into the framework without surgery?

I have Linux installed on the m.2 adapter so not sure what you have going on there. I am dual booting.

well i had a 4tb ssd in my pcie slot - twice and both times the fluctuating power on the rail burned out the ssd’s - that said I will not be using that slot for anything in the future it is a waste of space and time. I used a sabrent nvme m.2 ssd to pcie x4 card and it was catastrophic to say the least . . .. . Im running Ubuntu 24 - i made sure the rails were powered as they have a tendency to go to sleep and shut down the drive - so for what it is worth - the slot - is wasted space.

If you move that drive to an enclosure, does it still work? Had something similar happen and it would be seen by an enclosure but not that port for a couple reboots.

How did this purchase go for you? I was interested in doing something similar, but I was concerned about my lack of knowledge. I saw some devices mentioning circuit protection and I realized I have no way of really verifying the quality of these devices. I wanted to do a little more investigation before I risk compromising near $1,500 main board.

The board is fine the drive - the SSD m.2 was corrupted and all data was wiped clean - my entire embedded library. Thank goodness I had a backup. The was tested using an enclosure and it was not seen once it was plugged into my windows PC. So it happened to me it may not happen to u - I’m saying be cautious and careful.

No issues so far. System has been up for about a month now. Having a few extra USB ports has been nice. For those that don’t want to scroll back, this is what I’m referring to.

Yes but is it hardware failure or corruption on the drive? I’d like to investigate a similar issue with power problems.

I’ve seen it happen three times now, mainly with a cheap dram-less SSD where it disappears - that is the desktop can’t find it - until it’s either plugged into another slot on the board or thrown into a USB enclosure and viewed on another machine.

It seems to be temporary.

Are you using the Framework case or something else? If the Framework case is being used, how did that card fit in the space? Does it touch the power supply? Did you do cut outs on the back panel?

I’m using a Fractal Design North case. It’s a large case for a Mini-ITX MB, but I’ve always like it and don’t need the space savings.
