Has anyone tested an NVMe to PCIe like this Sabrent unit to add a third NVMe internally? I currently have a third drive running over USB4, but have those sweet PCIe lanes just sitting empty inside.
I’ve not tried it in the Framework Desktop. But I have tried these sort of PCIe to nvme cards in other systems, usually it’s just plug and play. I think it should work well in the framework.
I guess my biggest concern is with clearance. The main power connector is just above the slot, and the PSU is just millimeters below it. I have doubts that it can fit any solution with an adequate SSD heatsink, and there’s no air flow down there at all, even with the secondary fan installed.
I installed a third one in mine. It was kind of unstable and sometimes wouldn’t come back after suspend until I found a combination (pcie adapter card and nvme) that worked. Any of the wd black/blue or samsung 990 evo plus/pro along with either a pcie4 or pcie3 adapter card gave me problems with suspend. I got everything working well finally with a pcie 3 adapter card: Amazon.com: 10Gtek M.2 NVMe SSD Adapter Card, PCIe 3.0 x4 Slot (M-Key), Supports NVMe Drives via Bifurcation, Requires BIOS Split Support, for Desktop & Server : Electronics , riser cable, and orico O7000 nvme: Amazon.com: ORICO 2TB NVMe SSD PCIe 4.0- Up to 7000MB/s, M.2 SSD 2280 PCIe 4.0X4 Internal Solid State Drive, Fast Heat Dissipation, Compatible with macOS Windows for Gamers and Creators-O7000 (2TB) : Electronics . The card runs runs pretty hot right above the psu, but when I moved it with the riser cable it runs in the 40s-50s.
Did you install an additional fan in he case?
I’m looking at the grey box on the lower right of your photo.
Yes, I added a slim 80mm front fan for air intake.
Oh I thought the idea was that the big 90mm fan on the side was the only intake and everything else was an exhaust.
Yeah, I just installed according to the directions. The install directions said to: “orient it such that the fan is blowing into the Desktop, not away.“ How to Install an 80mm Fan in your Framework Desktop - Framework Guides .
