What is the design lifetime of Framework laptops?

I don’t work in consumer tech, but I assume that Framework has a certain design lifetime in mind when they design their components and tests. Does that number exist, and what is it? I’m asking specifically for my 12, but am curious more generally.

So far as I know, Framework has never explicitly said how long their systems are designed to last. My assumption was that my FW16 would last at least five years, that most of the parts would last fifteen-plus, and that if Framework sticks around, that I’d be able to just keep replacing parts as necessary or desirable.

Yeah, I’ve pressed them for an answer to that question. They’ve refused to answer it. They will not commit to any minimum support length for any product beyond the legally required warranty period.

Officially they have told me that they will support so long as their upstream vendors provide support (Intel/AMD/NVIDIA/etc) but they refuse to commit to any minimum length like 5 years or something like that.

though in practice my framework 13 is already 5 years old and still supported and they intentionally do not release many SKUs so it is probably not that bad.

Really I’m willing to bet that the issue is that the legal idea of “minimum support” implies providing 11th gen motherboards now and unto the future
while for practical purposes no one would care about replacing their motherboard with a 15th gen intel motherboard as long as it fit

I would assume they will last until a new technology pushes the existing platform out of favor. Since it’s just a ‘framework’ to host a variety of electronics, it could last for decades.

I’m not asking about how long the product will last. I’m asking, “When Framework does lifetime testing, what is the length of time they assume to be the lifetime of the product?”

As far as I recall, they have not said an exact length of time they assume for a lifetime. I gather they do not feel they are in a position yet to give any actual number of years guarantee, so they are cautious not to give any number that people could start using as an internal, unofficial, or intended exact number of years.
