So I can’t post to customer experience but, i’ve bought about 10 FW laptops at work. EDIT: NOT UNDER MY PERSONAL ACCOUNT
I feel like i’m getting more and more frustrated with FW. The forums are starting to break the cammels back. i can’t post to customer experience. Our topic on windows for enterprise was locked after i started discussing how to legally purchase windows 11 LTSC through the MS volume lisinceing partner portal.
as some of you may know the AMD frameworks have Microsoft Pluton embeded in to the motherboard. Your TPM is tied to windows 11 if you have to run windows. if you use Framework in the bussiness sector you might use an enterprise version. after posting links to the official MS pages for business to show people where they are located the thread was locked for “Piracy”. instead of banning the guy and deleting his comments they locked the entire thread.
FYI you can NOT disable Pluton on framework.
I feel like framework is getting worse not better. you can’t order via P.O, you can’t set legacy TPM for business still stuck on w10, discussion of LTSC is frowned upon. And while the support isn’t Asus or NewEgg bad but, it isn’t stellar either.
I had a FW13 screen fail right out of the box, i had to send multi photos of every single side of the laptop AT different angles. when i worked at big box TV company we usually only need one or two photos where non of the sides were cropped out. and replies between emails asking for more photos could take a day or two or three.
also open source bios isn’t looking too likely any time soon but, in years.
also my screenshot just failed to upload, i feel like i’m getting bad juju here
I’d also like to say that i hear System76 has been making strides to hep board level repair for their units and sell parts needed to do repairs from what i hear.
Well, I think someone linked to a certain grave site. Or talked too much in a way to suggest ing.
The site was already named & managed to slide by. So it was there for anyone who needed it. No one should have talked about that in more detail, rather just have been glad it’s first mention got by.
I tried to warn everyone in the begining of the thread.
If you own a business, work in IT for one, or have connections, you might be able to get it through there. If you don’t, well, we can’t talk about other options here. Let’s keep the conversation on the general advantages
It was allowed. And mods did not have to keep the thread open after the name was dropped of the site, but they did. Unfortunately, it seems things were pushed too far re alternative methods of getting it. Framework mods did need to maintain some line.
But that topic was just closed. So it can’t contiune any futher here. Or else this topic will be locked as well, in short order.
Perhaps, after some time, a new thread could be attempted. If the OP makes it abundantly clear not to speak about illegitimate methods. To keep the discussion only on the experience of using that Windows version and the advantages. But right now is certainly too soon.
i wonder if there is a way to do publicly viewable but, invite only participation.
Yeah man it’s just frustrating enough to be like lets wait another 3 years and see where they are at. I’ve seen other orgs are buying FW laptops. the LTT video talks about a guy who ordered 100 FWs.
They are slowly trying to cater to business more. That shows they aren’t seeking to not be business friendly. I think it’s just that business needs can be more challenging to satisfy well. So they are going slow, working their way to improve aspects as they are able.
Look at Bios update frequency. The frequency early on was completely no-go for many businesses. Even now, for some, it’s not fast enough yet. But Framework currently has to work with (and pay) an outside company to do the bios work. FW needs growth and money to continue to improve it. The consumer market provides this. Think of consumer sales as kickstarting their ability to cater to business more.
Agree. To be business friendly (friendly means so many things under the cover), it takes A LOT…and there’s many different business sectors to cater for. Other companies have decades of head start…and for Framework to play catch-up with them…it’s truly takes an additional organization. I’ve always been [overly] critical of the Framework Laptop, and my messaging have been quite abrasive over the years. But that’s because I hope / need Framework to succeed, not just in the consumer space, but also in business sectors.
(I’m in a position to recommend mobile devices to my organisation, but various engineering and support factors prevent me from doing so).
For example: I hope to see Framework Laptop 13 to show up on NIST’s List of Certified Devices. (2026?)
Pluton is a TPM module that is built into the newer models of CPUs. Unfortunately, it is only supported by Windows 11 as Microsoft did not add the functionality to detect Pluton TPMs to Windows 10.
I would say Framework right now wants to expand their business sector, but they are mainly focused on their consumer devices. They are essentially just marketing their consumer lineup to businesses rather than a dedicated business lineup with the expected enterprise features. They are also catering particularly to what they expect the consumers to need, which means support for older features such as a non Pluton TPM to get overlooked.
Framework laptops can already be quite a handful for the regular consumer, so it would be an even worse nightmare for businesses deploying at scale. There is a lot that Framework could improve on the business sector, including having dedicated support lines as well as building hardware with enterprise features such as Intel vPro and AMD PRO lineups and even possibly Smart Card readers. Of course, all of these things take time, which is why I personally would agree that Framework Laptops aren’t quite ready to be deployed at large by businesses.
it can be disabled all brand BUT, Framework. in disabled mode the Bios flips back to traditional TPM. greatfor business not ready to go for iwn 11 JUST yet.
Yeah but, they also said they would do some open source stuff, that thread was killed once or twice but, then AMD announced that in future YEARS they work to help open source uefi/bios at least some. so FW said they are game but, form what we can tell they don’t have the money or resources to hire firms to develop a new open source bios/uefis for current models other than like one intel model of FW?
They are jamming them self between a rock and a hard place. making things hard for both consumer and businesses.
I also get not allowing Pirate talk but, they also shouldn’t be stating what OS “regular” users should and should not be using. If someone legally gets an OS it’s their choice to choose what OS they run, and they should be free discuss their experiences so long as it isn’t pirate talk.
a specialist? you guys need a team of B2B! you also do not put the serial numbers out side of the box
the customer experience section seems to be locked for me it says i can not post there. i assume because i for business one account and forum on another account for privacy reasons.
That category is locked for regular users. It’s only intended for the Framework team to make posts (but regular users can still make replies to posts). You’re more than welcome to post in other categories.
id also forgot to mention that pluton is questionsable
great for business with 365 for but end home / non business/working consumers it is not open source and only select people have been able to see some of the source code for it. it also phones home.
You’ve provided no credible documentation of the enclave being able to access the network, so: [citation needed].
If you’d rather read an opinion written by somebody who actually knows things about trusted computing and free software—rather than a disinformation peddler—read mjg59’s blog post about it.
" as a security processor used for non-TPM scenarios like platform resiliency"
I believe that is the 365/azure integrations, i believe it can phone home not un-like an MDM, or Intel Manage Engine or AMD PSP.
“Pluton will also be responsible for automatically delivering firmware updates through the Windows Update” and since it’s an SoC it can grab the updates it’s self. Thats the way i read it.
some where on reddit, a guys blog was linked who had been given some access to the source code. it did not seem nefarious to him but, i remember him saying it had the capabilities for updates and authentication over network, sans os.
EDIT: the source where the guy claims to have dug through uefi code (not actual source code)
