Wireless display options missing in Ubuntu 24?

Which Linux distro are you using? Ubuntu

Which release version? 24.04
(if rolling release without a release version, skip this question)

(If rolling release, last date updated?)

Which kernel are you using?

Which BIOS version are you using?
3.20
Which Framework Laptop 13 model are you using? (AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series, Intel® Core™ Ultra Series 1, 13th Gen Intel® Core™ , 12th Gen Intel® Core™, 11th Gen Intel® Core™) 11th gen intel core

I’ve recently switched from Windows 11 to Ubuntu (sorry if this is a noob question), but the Wireless Display options are not showing in Ubuntu 24.04. Are there special drivers, etc. needed for wireless display in Linux for the Framework?

Thanks, any guidance appreciated.

Replying for the updates.

what are you calling “wireless display” ?
Wireless network or really the display/remote display?

The actual wireless display - Miracast (I think) is the technical name. I was able to connect to my external display (a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter hooked to a TV) in Windows, so I know the Framework is capable of it. I tried the Gnome Network Displays program without success (it works to cast to a speaker but not to the Wireless Display Adapter).

“Cast to a speaker” is probably happening through Bluetooth. Bluetooth doesn’t have enough bandwidth for video, so any remote display will be using something else. It looks like Miracast is a protocol that does it via wifi. It’s definitely the kind of thing you need a specific driver and software for. Perhaps that’s integrated in windows nowadays. You’ll have to search for what software you need on Ubuntu, if there exists an implementation at all.

It is also conceivable that there exist dongles that you can plug in that present as a display to the laptop and then do the wireless casting for you.

It looks like there is a project for supporting it: GitHub - albfan/miraclecast: Connect external monitors to your system via Wifi-Display specification also known as Miracast It doesn’t look like it’s packaged for Ubuntu so you’d have to build it yourself.

Looks like some Miracast and Chromecast support was added in GNOME Network Displays 0.91. But it sounds like the normal version of Ubuntu 24.04 still has an older version.

You can get the latest version of GNOME Network Displays from Flathub: flathub.org/apps/org.gnome.NetworkDisplays

Let us know how it goes and how the video is. Be nice if it works well.
