I switched from my 180W PSU to the 240W FW charger and my gpu will no longer reach 70W of power draw, instead capping around mid 60s, despite drawing more power and supposedly getting more frames in the same games on the 180W when pulling from battery. I used to draw 80-100W. The power draw seems to be consistent with the power draw from the 180W charger while it was recharging the battery drain. Has anyone else seen this issue?
I was able to use LACT to give it a kick in the rear and now it’s pulling 115W from dGPU and sipping 5W from battery, If I remove the 120W overclock and brought it down to 100W I imagine I’d lose the battery draw. Looks like it’s on the OS side.
Edit: 120W does weird things, but 100W seems fine. It’ll still sip from the battery a little bit, but that could be normal, I’ve never watched it this close before on other laptops.
Thanks for the tip! It does look like 110W is a sweet spot for me as well.
It looks like LACT is not a reliable way of getting past 60’sW power cap though, as it doesn’t seem to have worked on day 2. Unplugging and replugging in addition to LACT got it going again though.
I run an LLM or two on my FW (Fedora 43 btw) and am not seeing an issue of power cap.
Using nvtop, anytime I send a query to the LLM I watch as the GPU spikes to 110 and stays about 104 to 108 as it “thinks” and only drops once it provides the output.
What OS are you running again? Maybe a driver bug?
