3.25 BIOS upgrade on 11th gen won't apply (Linux)

I’ve upgraded my laptop’s BIOS before without problem, but the 3.25 one won’t apply. It doesn’t error, and it appeared to be updating, but I’m still at 3.24.

I’ve got a 14" laptop and it’s gen11 and I’m running fedora.

  1. I downloaded Download BIOS 3.25 (EFI Shell update) from Framework Laptop BIOS and Driver Releases (11th Gen Intel® Core™)
  2. I unzipped it.
  3. I copied the files to a FAT32 USB
  4. I rebooted the laptop and from the UEFI menu chose the USB
  5. It said something like “you have 3 seconds to read this long message before we do something anyway, we’re doing it now and you can read this message while we get on and do it” :wink:
  6. It appeared to be making updates happen - this surprised me because according to the text on the page linked above it “will stage the BIOS onto your internal SSD and run them all together in sequence”, so I was kinda expecting another reboot, but perhaps it just copied on the the EFI partition ran the update from there.
  7. It rebooted into my OS fine, but I’m on 3.24 not 3.25

So then I rebooted to the USB again. A big message came up “we are updating blah blah”, but not for long, then it rebooted into the os as normal and I’m still on 3.24

I rebooted AGAIN into the USB and it gave an error something about the update having been already applied.

But I’m still on 3.24.

Any clues?

Uh oh.

It seems I’ve joined the others who now have a bricked laptop that won’t turn on.

Have opened a support ticket. :crossed_fingers:

Soooo… to cut a long story short, the answer turned out to be: use a USB stick with a small capacity. This was what I was advised by support, I did it and the BIOS upgrade completed correctly. The one that didn’t work was 64GB; the one that did was 32GB.
