I have CL40 RAM and seen benchmarks with CL46 that were faster. Looks like the difference is smaller than the device to device variance. I doubt you’ll find anybody willing to buy 2 kits of RAM to test on the same machine.
Latency sensitivity is also very application specific.
In an application needing >64GB of ram having 96GB of CL46 vs 64GB of CL40 is going to be allmost infinitely faster though XD.
Although it’s slightly more complicated than purely latency numbers, because higher frequency means slightly lower latency. The CAS is number of cycles. But if you have more cycles you might end up with slightly lower actual wall clock latency.
Take a look at the chart Anandtech has on JEDEC Extends DDR5 Memory Specification to 8800 MT/s, Adds Anti-Rowhammer Features which is quite an interesting look at frequency & latency count vs absolute latency.
But yes, at the same bandwidth frequency, lower CAS latency/etc will have lower absolute latency. Which I presume is what you mean on 96GB vs 64GB.
The laptop tops out at 5600MHz, so I think it’s fair to assume that anyone worried about performance is running that frequency.
We are talking about a fixed frequency here so you can ignore that bit.
I tried 96 and mine would not boot with both modules installed. I could not even get to bios. Returned 96 and installed 64 no problems at all.
Picked up the 48×2 Crucial kit the other week in anticipation of my Batch 17 FW16. Hopefully I will stop running into RAM limitations when doing video editing, photogrammetry, all while asking locally hosted LLMs for advice. When I get the laptop, I’ll be sure to post results and/or problems here.
My 96GB Crucial kit booted just fine the first time, didn’t even take that long for memory training. Memtest86+ for 2 full passes, good to go!
Which ram kit was it? Did a single module boot?
Crucial RAM 96GB Kit (2x48GB) DDR5 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory CT2K48G56C46S5
And yes one installed would boot but 2 nada despite waiting for 10 minutes or more.
I really wanted it to work but sadly Amazon took it back and I bought same type but in 64GB.
same kit i got. CT2K48G56C46S5. got mine from amazon in feb (prep for my batch 6 fw16). and put both dimms in first boot didn’t take long. came right up no issues so far.
Huh, that exact same one, CT2K48G56C46S5, from Amazon booted up just fine with 2 installed. Just got mine.
For the Reddit users
We have created a thread similar to this one where community members can share which memory kit they have used for their Framework Laptop. If you’d like to contribute to that, you can find the thread here.
Crucial RAM 96GB Kit (2x48GB) DDR5 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory CT2K48G56C46S5
It took ~40 seconds for the memory training
