It sounds like it can power a lot of devices at once, but do any of the outputs actually support a full, 240 watt output? In the US, it looks like they only have the Nexode 300 watt. On that one, the highest output you can get from a single port is 140 watts.

Edit: I found reviews and it does advertise 240W through a single port.

Not available in the US yet, it seems.

Yes, the top one is 240W. It can do the top at 240W and the rest at 60W(without the type A) concurrently. It can also do 240W, 100W and 60W at the same time, so easily a family charger

If it shows up in the US and isn’t…too terribly expensive, I might give it a go. For science, lol.

The nice thing: The top port is always 240W. So it should not renegotiate when anything else gets plugged in.

But what realy bothers me. They forgot to mention the FW16:

I would strongly suggest everyone here to take a look to the other threads regarding 240w charging and gaming with non-OEM power supplies.
There currently is some buggy code in BIOS 3.04 and 3.05 that can seriously impact gaming performance and smoothness using non OEM chargers (i.e. everything except the Framework’s own 180W charger).
Do not buy “novelty” chargers excepting smooth and plug and play performance. EC code is flawed and until it’s fixed by framework via bios update, it’s wasted money IMHO.

TL;DR: wait for fix (BIOS 3.06…?), then buy big charger.

Does the MacBook actually take 240W?I thought it maxes out somewhere in the 1xxW range.

I remember someone talking about some method to work around the bug, in this thread.

This would be a great charger if the GPU could supplement power through the type C on the back. 240W for the front, 100W extra on the back! Engage the space heater mode

If i recall corectly this is not possible. The 240W uses 48 Volt and the 100W port 20 Volt.

I know this. But such new tech is quite exiting.

I think we have diagnosed all the problems with the existing buggy code now.
The problem is actually the Embedded Controller (EC) and not the BIOS.

We have now proven that someone has managed to get a FW16 to draw 493 Watts.
So, even with a 240W PSU, it is still going to dip into the battery at times.
But, the great thing now is that with our knowledge now, the user can choose which approach to take
a) let the game take 493 W if it wishes and dip into the battery.
b) limit the power draw to 240W PSU so it dips into the battery hardly ever.

The options are:

  1. apply work arounds such as limiting the charge current to zero during game play and force the charger to “idle” mode.

  2. Install customer EC firmware that correct the EC bugs and can be adjusted to whatever behaviour you desire (i.e. (a) or (b) or somewhere in between.

One does not need to wait for a BIOS update to get smooth game play now.

Is it possible to have it stay permanently on the rw firmware, booting into the flash enviroment every time is kind of unpractical.

I do hope framework implement/pull at least some of the ec fixes in upstream firmware at some point, maybe with a bios toggle for power limiting to “power adabter” or “battery+power adabter” and maybe a “let me use all of the charger” option if they want to keep their ultra conservative values by default.

Regarding keeping it on the RW firmware.
The following actions keep it on RW firmware.

  1. Keep the laptop powered on at all times. Keeps in RW.
  2. When powering off, don’t power off, use suspend instead. Keeps in RW.
  3. A reboot will leave it in RW.
  4. If powering off, power back on in less that 40 seconds. Keeps in RW.
  5. You can add a UEFI boot option that automatically runs “ecotool.efi reboot rw” that will save key presses when wishing to switch.

The following reverts the RW to the RO:

  1. Powering off for more that 40 seconds. (Its not exact, it might be 60 seconds for some).

There is an option to make the customer EC firmware the RO as well as RW version, but you get a lot closer to “my laptop is bricked” country, so I am not temped to give details apart from its possible, but I myself doesn’t even try it for fear of bricking my laptop.

Yeah I am aware of those and all are not particularly practical.

Also aware of that but I was hoping there was a nicer option.

Guess I’ll leave it like it is for now.

Just out of curiosity, with what we now know about the EC firmware and the various work arounds we now have, e.g. setting charge limit to 0 and setting IDLE mode.
Are you able to get good consistent game play now with the 240W PSU?

I get good consistent performance when I force idle and set the charge limit to 0. I always set myself to RW and run a few commands (CO, force idle)

I have the other some somewhere back in my terminal history but I really only need to force idle for it to work well.
