AMD driver timeout on my new Ryzen™ 7 7840HS - Radeon™ RX 7700S - 180W

My Framework 16 (Ryzen™ 7 7840HS - Radeon™ RX 7700S - 180W), which I just got, keeps having driver timeout errors every so often, even with light use. The whole screen freezes for a few seconds, then it goes black for a second, then comes back with a red “AMD Diagnostic Report” error box. This happens even when I am simply browsing or watching videos, and not plying games.

I am currently playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla - it plays well for many hours, but after the first crash, it keeps crashing until it starts restarting.

Google advised me to do a complete driver reset. I used DDU in safe mode to completely uninstall and reinstall my Adrenaline. My drivers are all the latest 25.9.1. This did not help.

Please advise. Also please let me know what other relevant information I should add to this.

I’ve been having similar issues, but haven’t been able to solve the driver issues. You can probably solve the crashing though, take out your GPU and inspect the space inbetween the output vents and the fans, mine had a carpet of dust, remove the fans and scrape it all out. It won’t stop the driver issues but it should prevent the crashes.

Note that the latest drivers from AMD are not always 100% compatible with Framework Laptops. One option would be to uninstall the AMD drivers entirely and reload the driver package from Framework. It has the latest driver that is known to be good for their hardware.

Laptop hardware is not nearly as simple as desktop hardware when it comes to driver support.

It is understandable that most users want the latest drivers for all the new features and updates. Though that comes with all the other little nuances that may not be 100% ironed out. Fortunately, using a slightly outdated driver from the latest release is not significantly impacting the performance on the Framework Laptop 16.

The suggestion to check the hardware connections and if it can vent properly is good. Though, it probably is not stuffed up with dust since the device is really new.

I installed the latest suggested drivers from Framework. This time I checked more carefully:

After ~5 hours of playing Valhalla, the screen suddenly froze, went black, the game turned off, and there was a driver timeout error. No overheating, no sudden spike of usage (or most likely not - I was teleporting, but its not unusual).

I am having almost the exact same issue - please let me know if you figure anything out regarding this
