Very excited to see the final specs. FM12 should be a lot more versatile than a Chromebook.
I love it and I will recommend it to anybody that just needs a basic laptop, but I won’t be getting it because I have a 16.
Okay, so I did the math and assuming that the laptops are the same density the cautious estimate is about 2.5lb and the estimate I think is more inline is 2.2lb and an extreme estimate (if they made the plastic thin) is about 2.0 lb
alternatively, if we assume that about 30% of the laptop’s weight is the chassis (reasonable considering its made out of aluminum) then a fw13 sized laptop made out of pc/abs would weigh 2.4lbs. Applying our volume estimates, the FL12 might weigh 2.1lb with a conservative volume estimate and 1.7 with an aggressive volume estimate.
this is speculation and I don’t know how much of the FL13 is aluminum but everything else seems to otherwise be scaled appropriately in that laptop except for the screen, expansion cards and webcam.
So, I did some calculations:
The Framework 12.2" is about 8.62% smaller than the Framework 13.3", if the name is indicative of the screen size. According to this article from Tom’s Hardware, the screen is 16:10. I also compared both the 13.3 and the 12.2 against your assumption that the Asus Chromebook CR11 is comparable size-wise.
Putting these metrics together, we should expect the dimensions of the Framework 12 to be approximately 29.48cm x 18.43cm x 1.91cm. Someone can double-check my math.
Screen size is not a good indicator. Sadly can’t find it anymore. Either on reddit or somewhere in the forum someone took a screen grab ob the motherboard from the Linus video. Then they measured the chassis size based on the size of the quick swap modules.
The width they came up with was around 29.5 too. Height was 20cm+
Thickness hard to gauge, but around 2 cm I would guess.
Edit: Found it Introducing the Framework Laptop 12 - #81 by felurx
- FW12 287x214mm
- FW13 297x229mm
I think the difference are the bezels. Saw some renderings without bezels, but in the LTT video there are huge (for nowadays standards) screen bezels https://youtu.be/-lErGZZgUbY?si=65scv9mWFlOjB0da&t=593
Personally don’t mind them for a convertible.
There’s a lot about the Framework 12 that I like. Not sure if I’ll buy one. First, my Framework 13 works fine and is already more powerful, secondly, Framework needs to demonstrate that they take Firmware updates seriously before I’ll buy anything from them again. The current situation is awful. Thirdly, I’m not a student and would prefer a higher class laptop.
On the other hand, I really like the convertible mode and a touchscreen and the new case.
My 13 fits the same purpose. It runs well and I pre-ordered the new AMD 300 board. I wouldn’t replace it, but I might consider the 12" in the future.
Depending on how inexpensive the FW 12 is, I may get one for…testing. Yeah, for science. That justifies it…right?
One thing I like is that it doesn’t look to have any air intakes on the bottom. So it can sit on a lap covered by a throw blanket, or on a pillow, or whatever without worrying about blocking the cooling vents. Granted, passively cooled would be great, but that’s probably not practical for the price and performance target they were aiming for. But simply moving the intake off the bottom is still an improvement over the FW 13, in my opinion. At least, for my use case as a daily driver.
yeah, I want one.
donno how soon I’ll get it, as I’m still paying for my 13, and not thrilled about the possible absence of a backlit keyboard, but I’ll live…probably.
almost certainly getting it before the 16, not really interested in getting a first gen 16 unless the price drops by about half, and I’ve still got almost two years left on the warranty for my current gaming laptop.
the 12 though…just found out like last week that my last 12" is unrepairable, framework had great timing there
I was sold on switching to a FW13 from System76 until I saw the 12, and now I think I’m going to wait for the 12.
My only hesitation is the aspect ratio (I really miss 4:3) and of course impatience
But if the convertible features & pen work OK under Linux (ideally ElementaryOS), then it could replace a lot of other equipment I use and any added toughness is a huge bonus.
I guess we can expect some Hockney pictures once you get one …
The 12 honestly felt to me like the only on brand, on mission announcement at the event. (aside from the mainboard upgrades ofc)
Absolutely hyped for the FW12, more so than I was hyped for the Steam Deck.
I was looking for a “family/traveling computer” to prevent my children from being sucked into the iPad universe. It always breaks my heart to see it happen because kids are naturally attracted to physical keyboards. The FW12 will serve as my daughter’s first PC assembly ceremony and then we can finally look up Pokémon stats together on a proper screen instead of my phone. I just need to figure out which distro is the easiest to lock down (restrict websites etc.)
I understand that the current configuration is optimized for schools, but I hope that FW releases an AMD APU configuration for us individual buyers in the future so that we can enjoy some very basic games in tent mode. I was about to get the ROG Flow X13 instead, but it’s just not as cheerful, and even their SKU without an Nvidia GPU does not seem to have perfect Linux support.
Not really hyped. But i already have adn Framework Laptop 13. But if I didn’t already had one I would probably go for the 12" version.
Been using 2-in-1s for almost 9 years before switching to FW13.
Things I missed:
- freehand drawing
- PDF annotation
- music reading
Things I don’t miss:
- screen and hinge prone to breaking over time
- huge amount of e-waste created
Having a repairable convertible seems to be the best of both worlds. But I would feel bad for creating e-waste for getting rid of my FW13 (11th gen) so soon. It would be fantastic if more of the components are compatible with the new FW12, e.g. the mother board?
Can’t wait for the specs to come out.
I think a good solution is to sell it (or give it away) to someone who is looking for a laptop and doesn’t need the latest and greatest. The 11th gen is still very capable for everyday use. And that person will have an upgrade path available if they ever want to move up from the 11th gen.
Personally very excited for the Framework 12.
Long time fan of the Asus EeePC line, starting with the EeePC 700 (original). Since then mostly kept with it, with my newest laptop being the Asus Transformer T101HA. (Mostly stick with the 10’ size). Windows and Linux.
- Linux has a few quirks though with the couple older Asus laptops I got, screen rotated, and acting like the nonexistant function lock is enabled [got workarounds, but rather have something I don’t need to much with].
- Haven’t quite found where I want to go after Asus stopped with the transformer line, but been eyeing to find something in a small/cheap/USB-C line to replace it (I loved it charged over USB (wish it was usb-c and not micro-usb).
- I get the sense this market went to the chromebooks (haven’t explored those yet).
- Loosely was considering the 13, but was wary of the size (and price was out of range. Until this was launched, was going to wait for if they had old stock perhaps).
Been hoping for more nuggets of information on this, so been skimming the forums. But it feels like a great fit to replace the Asus Transformer T101 (with a intel atom processor).
Welcome to the community!
It’s almost April, but who knows how deep into April they will release more info or open pre-orders.
soon
