Not soon enough ![]()
I’m excited. My wallet is in the corner, arms crossed, shaking its head and sighing in disappointment.
funny how that happens… mine screamed in terror when i saw the announcement for the desktop and the 12… ![]()
I want to put it (and 3-4 of the 50wh batteries in an old t60p chassis I have and then weather seal it. I want to put the mainboard into a custom ultrabay enclosure and somehow have it swappable to also be used as a desktop with a custom thin-client style dock… I want to be able to tactically reload my framework mainboard
Trying to brainstorm the benefits of doing this…
Maybe it means you can run without fans and swap boards when you start thermal throttling?
I’m exited for the new FW 12 too. It is only 1 week before pre-orders start. I’ll hope that it has an good price too. And I want to go for the green one, because it matchs my Fairphone 5 and my green Fairphone Fairbuds XL. That will be an nice combinations with an green FW 12 laptop.
Whole new meaning to going green
Let us know what you settle on. I recall looking some time ago & didn’t find something I liked.
Fedora Magazine has an article on “Fedora and Parental Controls”.
its almost perfect. I dont know why there is wedge design at front bottom. Why not just totally boxy design😹
I’ve been using a 2017 Google Pixelbook (Eve) as my preferred portable daily driver ever since it was released, but it has recently been showing its age – especially since Google up and did its usual bit of dissolving a successful product team and stopped developing for it. The battery is in poor condition, the stylus it was designed for is kind of lame (it requires a single AAAA [sic!] battery), the rubber wrist pads have started to yellow, and the touch display is occasionally flaky. Replacing ChromeOS with Arch Linux has extended its life somewhat, thanks to the Chrultrabook project, but the whole thing is starting to feel slow and not-super-stable.
I normally don’t buy laptops because I build PCs and I prefer to upgrade by replacing individual parts and I like being able to service my machines, but the lighter weight 2-in-1 form factor is in a sweet spot for me and was too useful to ignore. I settled in for the long haul with my Eve expecting that it would be the last laptop I’d buy for a while.
Serendipitous timing that FW 12 preorders are about to drop and I’m doing research for replacing it. I have long told myself: if I see someone offer a halfway decent, modular, user-serviceable 2-in-1 I’ll give it a try.
Looks like I’m about to put my money where my mouth is. I didn’t know about Framework until today because I have been living under a rock in order to preserve my sanity. I am actually excited about the idea of putting one together and booting up Gentoo to properly see what torture it can take. >:3
I worry about this as well because of the consistently audible fan noise from using an Intel 13th gen FW13 with Windows (FW13I13W11?). And you have to deal with the bug where the computer will randomly wake up from sleep. I’m assuming this isn’t a problem with the boards with AMD CPUs based on the positive reviews that I’ve seen for the FW13.
I have a system76 lemur pro that is my light weight travel laptop. I hope the FW12 is lighter. I know that the 12 has smaller dimensions, so we’ll see. I’m getting it though.
@Charlie_6 wrong? nothing. But there is 8G soldered, and one slot. It’s a common design. It’s a very good laptop, sometimes I think about selling it, but it’s so dependable. I’ve tried other distros on it, but PopOS is flawless. NixOS is very good on it as well. Ironically, I couldn’t get Windows to run as well. Oh well, rambled enought…
Sounds like the 8gb is soldered. I’m not a fan of any soldered memory. I do understand some of the reasoning for doing it, frankly don’t care, not worth it imho.
Imo soldered + single sodimm > single sodimm >>> all soldered. You do get the benefit of dual channel but still only have 1 sku of the board and get to expand the memory later. Hell for something on the more budget end of the spectrum being able to buy the base 8gb (or whatever) model and later just add a stick of ram also has it’s value.
I am unreasonably excited.
I am truly ready for this laptop. I am not necessarily a fan of the kiddish design, but considering how portable and durable it is combined with the lowish price makes it the perfect device for me. I mean, I use Linux, so the lower spec is just fine for me, and I have used worse on Windows 11 with very good performance. Considering it has strong single core performance for a laptop, the necissary performance for what I do personally. I like the repairabiltiy and upgradability of all Frameworks that make them last a lifetime. And, I know the duability of TPU. I am a 3D printer owner, and I have used TPU for anything that needs impact strength. It will also likely be lighter. Considering that I am the person is very much of the mentality that laptops should durable to the point where a dedicated laptop pouch in a backpack or a dedicated carrying case is not inherently required along with it still being insanely portable and thus lightweight, this does sound perfect for me. Now, I will likely go with the black colorway, but I can say that even the lower end CPU this ships with is very powerful. I’ve used a lower end CPU that was an 8th Gen Intel i5, and it performed just fine for Onshape, Fusion360, and FreeCAD. Considering the i3-1315U this contains is more powerful and has a better iGPU than even what I am running, an Intel i5-1240P, I am confident that this laptop is very ideal for someone like me. I mean, the specs it has can run Solidworks for light work such as that one might do in college with any serious work being done on a workstation either owned by a university or a company. The only thing I wouldn’t recommend doing on the Framework 12 wth either CPU is heavy Solidworks or gaming, but light solidworks and light gaming should both be just fine. This is everything I need in a laptop considering my most resource intensive game is lightly modded Minecraft.
There are some kiosk versions for Linux that do a very good job of being locked down.
