[BIOS Issue] Stuck in Force Secure Boot Mode – Unable to Boot Linux or Access Secure Boot Settings

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a BIOS issue with my Framework laptop running an AMD Ryzen 7840U and BIOS version INSYDE JFP30.03.03. I accidentally enabled Force Secure Boot under the Administer Secure Boot submenu, and now I’m unable to boot my Linux OS from either my SSD or a USB stick. Both are bootable when Secure Boot is disabled, but now I get messages like “manjaro boot failed” or “(device name) boot failed” when I attempt to boot.

I tried going back into Administer Secure Boot to disable Force Secure Boot, but I get a message saying:

“The operation is only allowed before booting any boot device! Please reset the system and enter this menu directly if you need to use this operation.”

I’m wondering if there’s a way to perform a BIOS reset that would restore settings without affecting my OS installation on the SSD. I couldn’t find any reset option in the BIOS menus so far. Has anyone encountered this, or does anyone know if there’s a way to disable Force Secure Boot safely?

Thanks for any advice!

If you are really stumped, you could just try removing the SSD and resetting the BIOS without the SSD plugged in. That will likely guarantee no data loss before resetting.

If you dive into the secure boot settings, I’m pretty sure there should be a way to reset the secure boot settings. I do not have a Framework 13 though, so I cannot confirm if this can be done.

Hi @Elliot_Lu ,
thanks. Do you have the insyde BIOS with fancy GUI? At my inside, the main menu has 5 submenu: Continue, Boot Manager, Boot From File, Administer Secure Boot, Setup Utility. As said I cannot enter Administer Secure Boot due to the error message above. Inside Setup Utility, I did not find a reset… Do you have the reset inside BIOS from your framework?

To SSD, I just removed it thanks.

I found a solution to this error message: “The operation is only allowed before booting any boot device! Please reset the system and enter this menu directly if you need to use this operation.”

To resolve this, I pressed F2 to enter the BIOS before any attempt to boot from a device. Once in the BIOS, I navigated to the Administer Secure Boot submenu, where the factory settings option is also located. This resolved the issue.
