Black screen, crash

Which Linux distro are you using?

Debian

Which release version?

testing

Which kernel are you using?

Linux debian 6.18.5+deb14-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.18.5-1 (2026-01-16) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Which BIOS version are you using?

I don’t know.

Which Framework Laptop 13 model are you using?

Intel® Core™ Ultra Series 1 (AFAIK)

Since some months I have a Framework 13 at work (Debian 13 stable) and it works great.
Now I bought exactly the same setup for private computing (Debian 14 testing) and every now and then (multiple times a day!) the screen gets black, comes back, gets black again, until I hard reboot by power button. Today, it even crashed after black screen.

What could it be? Bad cables? Bad RAM? Bad kernel?

Thanks for any help!

The list of possible causes is pretty long — you really need to look at the logs (journalctl, maybe dmesg) to narrow it down.

Also, just in case: do you happen to have a magnet near the left side of the laptop, or are you sometimes placing it next to something magnetic? The lid sensor is magnet-based, and that can cause black-screen behavior that looks like a crash.

As you are using Debian Testing, you may want to try with a more recent Debian kernel. Debian ustable has 6.18.8 which may fix issue with recent intel Xe integrated gpu.

Funny: After writing here, the black screen + crash did not happen anymore. Not even once.
Very strange.
I’m pretty sure, that no magnets were around, btw.
Anyway, I now installed the latest kernel, 6.18.9, from unstable and will reboot now.
I hope the case is closed.
