Booting Ventoy from a USB drive

Hey,

I just got the AMD version of the Framework 13 laptop and was able to put it together in less than 15 minutes! Everything seems to be working great so far. Boots and runs the (I assume UEFI) BIOS just fine.

I have a Ventoy USB thumb drive that works just fine with my PC running UEFI, and my previous Librem 13v4 that runs a traditional Coreboot BIOS (which this laptop was meant to replace). It was already shipped running the latest 3.05 BIOS as well, which is a great touch.

It detects the thumb drive just fine when I plug it into the USB-A port. However, when I boot up with it plugged in, it says, “EFI USB Device (PNY USB 2.0 FD) boot failed,” then another message, “Default boot device missing or boot failed …”

When I go into the Boot from File menu in the BIOS, I can see the device, and then Directories like <grub>, <ventoy>, <EFI>, <tool> and <System Volume Information>. When I try to boot something from the <ventoy> directory, such as ventoy_x64.efi, it says, “boot failed.” Same for all the other EFI files I have tried in there.

What am I doing wrong? This has worked just fine on all of my other computers. Do I need to reinstall Ventoy, or does this machine only support booting ISO/EFI images written directly to the thumb stick?

Ah, okay. It seems like the problem was Secure Boot was still enabled, even though I ordered the laptop without an OS. Seems like a pretty significant oversight to me.
