Bottom of screen flashing white

Every now and then, I’m getting a white rectangle (about the entire bottom half of the screen) flashing white for a frame or two… enough to see and distract me, but it doesn’t stick around for long. The frequency doesn’t seem to be fixed, and I don’t see it at all when I’m running a full-screen game.

This doesn’t leave any graphical artifacts or cause any system instability. If it wasn’t the same size/location every time, it would almost seem like a tearing/buffering problem.

More Details

  • UEFI graphics mode set to “Gaming” (which, AFAIK, just reserves more RAM for the iGPU)
  • Display 2560x1600 @ 165Hz
  • running normal things, currently: Firefox, Thunderbird, Lunatask, Signal, Discord, Obsidian, Konsole

I see this also, as well as the occasional GPU crashes I talked about in a separate post.

I’ve cross-posted this to the EndeavourOS forum in case someone there has some clues for diagnosing this issue.

It makes me worry that I need to replace the GPU expansion or the motherboard/CPU.

There are some known (suspected) bugs in the AMD driver; IDK if they apply to your setup or this would help, but the devs have been recommending to try testing this kernel instead:

You might consider trying that kernel if you’re having issues. It’s only been about a day but it’s been stable for me so far and I haven’t seen the artifacts.
