My trackpad click is giving out again too. This is my second input cover from that issue.
I’m so done with Framework’s absolute trash reliability and quality control. They even had to lock the thread I wrote about my laptop issues to hide the bad press.
The repairability mission just isn’t enough anymore. Repairability doesn’t help when the laptop needs to be repaired so frequently that you’re constantly shipping and replacing parts.
My delete key started to act weirdly (sometimes yes, sometimes not). After some time i bit the bullet and emailed the support. After a thorough diagnostic (multiple tests, video, pictures), a replacement input cover is on its way.
Same here, the issue is intermittent but highly annoying. Only the delete key is affected, nothing else (so far anyway). Pressing it hard does not make a difference. I’m in touch with support, we’ll see what it brings.
13" or 16" system? 13"
Which mainboard? AMD Ryzen 5 7640U
Which OS? Arch Linux
Do you frequently use an external keyboard? No
Do you use a powered USB Hub? If so, which kind? No
Which port do you usually use when charging your laptop? Rear left
Yep, I did the same and the replacement is now on its way. Support handled it well in general, and the troubleshooting before shipping the replacement is sensible to avoid abuse of the warranty.
Well, my delete key finally stopped working entirely on my 13" 13th gen. A couple months out of warranty.
It had been flaky on Ubuntu since January, but since it worked when I booted into Windows, or if I shut down, and restarted, I figured it was a software issue. But no longer. It’s dead. Doesn’t work after a shutdown on Ubuntu, doesn’t work at all in Windows either. Only the delete key, nothing else is effected. So, popped on and found this thread. Oh, and tried an external keyboard. No problems.
I remapped F12 to delete, so I’m functionally OK (except on Windows). But I’m not interested in paying for a new keyboard (or input cover?) with what appears to be a manufacturing/product problem that is a common and recurring issue. Ugh.
Just a quick followup…
Contacted support, had the same gauntlet of photos, video, BIOS resets and reseating others have detailed. After jumping through all the hoops, the final determination is “yup, you need a new input cover, but you’re out of warranty, so bummer”. Guess I should have reported it as soon as it first seemed flaky.
I like that the laptop is repairable and upgradable, but I’m giving their support a not so great rating. This isn’t a one-off issue, the number of people with exactly the same problem just in this thread tells us it’s a design/build problem they should at minimum acknowledge as a “known issue”.
Not buying another input cover, since they seem to have a proven recurring defect they don’t seem to be addressing. Instead, I used input remapper on Linux to map F12 to delete, and that’ll keep me going.
Do you use a powered USB Hub? If so, which kind? No
Which port do you usually use when charging your laptop? Rear right
I bought the framework in february '24, the first time i noticed the problem was in october. For now i have always been able to fix the problem for about 1-2 days, by pressing the del-key - as someone stated above - very hard, which means that you have to apply counter-pressure to the back of the case/expansion card so that it does not flex.
But i noticed, that doing the opposite works better: Slightly and carefully lift the del key with a screwdriver just by 1-2mm, maybe from more than one side get’s the key alive again on (for now) every try.
same here.
intermittendly working. feels like after certain bending/weight on the cover/trackpad it starts/stops. disconnecting and reconnecting the cabling did not resolve the issue nor did it get worse from it, so seems not to be an issue with the connectors/cables.

Which OS? Windows
Do you frequently use an external keyboard? Yes
Do you use a powered USB Hub? If so, which kind? Yes, several different ones
Which port do you usually use when charging your laptop? Rear left port
will also contact support over this and refer to this thread.
Add me to the list. Del key is intermittently not working, I’ve owned the laptop for about 2 years now. It will periodically start working if I mash it, but then it’ll stop working again.
Is there really no way to repair this without replacing the entire assembly? I’ll have to look into this more but I’m definitely not averse to using a soldering iron.

Which mainboard? 11th gen

Do you frequently use an external keyboard? Haven’t for over a year
Do you use a powered USB Hub? If so, which kind? No
Which port do you usually use when charging your laptop? Alternates, but usually left lower (closest to caps lock)
Shadow Edit: I tried to remap to F12 using PowerToys as others suggested, and it’s not working for me. I ended up having to remap ctrl+backspace using PowerToys to get delete back. Not ideal. I might open an issue on the PowerToys GitHub as I see similar issues with other laptops and remapping keys…
Same thing with this key. Have to mash super hard then works. Then later stops working again. Support is asking me if I have cleaned this. There’s way too many screws to replace it.

Sometimes they work, but recently it seems to have completely stopped working. Reached out to support initially, but couldnt really type the response (lol?). Ordered new keyboard and working on another laptop in the meantime. Also it is out of warrenty so I dont think there is anything they could do anyways. Hope it fixes things…
But, a work around that I found that fixes it for anywhere from a day - 3 weeks is by giving a solid full handed press down on the section of keyboard that doesn’t register and then typically the keys will start working normally.
The occurrence of this issue on my device has happened less frequently over the last month than it was a few months ago, but my work around always worked decently enough so I never bothered to contact support (given I am also significantly out of warranty lol (3+ years))
