Broken delete key - like literally stopped working

Thank you for this workaround and your communication on the issue, I’m experiencing the same thing. I didn’t purchase a new input cover because the problem seemed too oddly specific and I didn’t think that would fix it… it seems my fears weren’t unfounded.

  • 13" or 16" system? 13"
  • Which mainboard? 12th gen
  • Which OS? Windows 11 Pro
  • Do you frequently use an external keyboard? No
  • Do you use a powered USB Hub? If so, which kind? No
  • Which port do you usually use when charging your laptop? Rear right

Thanks for sharing! I hope many others will likewise share lots of details.
Interesting that you, like me, use the rear right port for charging… the one closest to the delete key. But that’s just speculation at this stage. Hopefully more data will come in, and one day, eventually, Framework will take the problem seriously instead of refusing to investigate it.

Same issue on my Framework (12gen DIY Batch 2) - Seems to be a hardware issue as pressing the key hard registers an action but tapping it normally has no effect.

I’m experiencing this now as well. Add it to the long list of defects.

Same here, I’ve been going crazy thinking it was some software thing but I ran xev and pressing delete showed nothing whatsoever.

And then I rebooted and came to this post and… it’s working again. I was plugged in before, now I am on battery.

I’ll see if I can isolate this more.

My trackpad click is giving out again too. This is my second input cover from that issue.

I’m so done with Framework’s absolute trash reliability and quality control. They even had to lock the thread I wrote about my laptop issues to hide the bad press.

The repairability mission just isn’t enough anymore. Repairability doesn’t help when the laptop needs to be repaired so frequently that you’re constantly shipping and replacing parts.

Intermittent delete key issue. Bending seems to help maybe, but not reliably. No other key has an issue so far.

  • Which OS? Linux (Arch)
  • Do you frequently use an external keyboard? Sometimes
  • Do you use a powered USB Hub? If so, which kind? No
  • Which port do you usually use when charging your laptop? rear left > rear right, but both are used fairly frequently.

Unfortunately the delete key has gone intermittent on my 16 month old Framework.

  • Do you frequently use an external keyboard? rarely
  • Do you use a powered USB Hub? If so, which kind? rarely, Monoprice 7-in-1 Dual Monitor Docking Station
  • Which port do you usually use when charging your laptop? Rear left port

My delete key started to act weirdly (sometimes yes, sometimes not). After some time i bit the bullet and emailed the support. After a thorough diagnostic (multiple tests, video, pictures), a replacement input cover is on its way.

I am also experiencing a broken delete key on my framework laptop. On an external keyboard everything works fine. I will contact support.

  • Which OS? Linux (OpenSUSE Tumbleweed)
  • Do you frequently use an external keyboard? yes
  • Do you use a powered USB Hub? If so, which kind? yes, ThinkPad USB -C Dock Gen 2
  • Which port do you usually use when charging your laptop? Rear left and Rear right about equally

Same here, the issue is intermittent but highly annoying. Only the delete key is affected, nothing else (so far anyway). Pressing it hard does not make a difference. I’m in touch with support, we’ll see what it brings.

Same here… So weird

Yep, I did the same and the replacement is now on its way. Support handled it well in general, and the troubleshooting before shipping the replacement is sensible to avoid abuse of the warranty.

Well, my delete key finally stopped working entirely on my 13" 13th gen. A couple months out of warranty.

It had been flaky on Ubuntu since January, but since it worked when I booted into Windows, or if I shut down, and restarted, I figured it was a software issue. But no longer. It’s dead. Doesn’t work after a shutdown on Ubuntu, doesn’t work at all in Windows either. Only the delete key, nothing else is effected. So, popped on and found this thread. Oh, and tried an external keyboard. No problems.

I remapped F12 to delete, so I’m functionally OK (except on Windows). But I’m not interested in paying for a new keyboard (or input cover?) with what appears to be a manufacturing/product problem that is a common and recurring issue. Ugh.

I seem to have the same problem.
Does it make sense, to track when we bought our laptop? I bought mine on Dec 17 2022.

I got this issue on my 7640U AMD Laptop, unfortunate. Luckily, support was very fast and my replacement is coming soon.
