intermittendly working. feels like after certain bending/weight on the cover/trackpad it starts/stops. disconnecting and reconnecting the cabling did not resolve the issue nor did it get worse from it, so seems not to be an issue with the connectors/cables.

Add me to the list. Del key is intermittently not working, I’ve owned the laptop for about 2 years now. It will periodically start working if I mash it, but then it’ll stop working again.
Is there really no way to repair this without replacing the entire assembly? I’ll have to look into this more but I’m definitely not averse to using a soldering iron.

Shadow Edit: I tried to remap to F12 using PowerToys as others suggested, and it’s not working for me. I ended up having to remap ctrl+backspace using PowerToys to get delete back. Not ideal. I might open an issue on the PowerToys GitHub as I see similar issues with other laptops and remapping keys…
Same thing with this key. Have to mash super hard then works. Then later stops working again. Support is asking me if I have cleaned this. There’s way too many screws to replace it.

Sometimes they work, but recently it seems to have completely stopped working. Reached out to support initially, but couldnt really type the response (lol?). Ordered new keyboard and working on another laptop in the meantime. Also it is out of warrenty so I dont think there is anything they could do anyways. Hope it fixes things…
But, a work around that I found that fixes it for anywhere from a day - 3 weeks is by giving a solid full handed press down on the section of keyboard that doesn’t register and then typically the keys will start working normally.
The occurrence of this issue on my device has happened less frequently over the last month than it was a few months ago, but my work around always worked decently enough so I never bothered to contact support (given I am also significantly out of warranty lol (3+ years))
It happened to me now, just out of warranty. It used to be intermittent, and I thought I was just imagining things or something, but now it’s not working more often than not. They need to address this, it is clearly a hardware flaw, and I shouldn’t have to pay for a replacement when it’s their fault.

I (seemingly) solved it. Open up the laptop and tighten as many of the Phillips screws that attach the keyboard to the input cover as possible (some of the screws are blocked by components that overlap them). I found that all such screws had loosened considerably. Just be careful not to strip the heads - although Framework does sell a full set of replacements for $5 if you do.
One additional bonus is the keyboard feel (which seemed to become more mushy with age) will also be improved. Presumably, following the full steps here to access all such screws would provide even better results. I might try adding thread lock to make the fix last longer (permanently?).
Been stuck in the same boat as you all for many months - the delete key started working only intermittently, and then progressed to being entirely dysfunctional. At the start, applying pressure seemed to help but this eventually did not help. I reached out to support and the phenomenon was written off as “customer-induced” due to fall damage to the upper right corner of the laptop. This solution immediately rescued the functionality of my delete key, and fixed some of the “mushiness” in the keys that seemingly developed over the lifetime of the laptop. I am curious exactly how long it may take for the screws to loosen once more, but for now the issue seems resolved.
Thanks for this suggestion, as I have also been experiencing issues with the ‘delete’ key same as others in this thread. I thought initially the computer was frozen as I couldn’t unlock it . I’ve been able to get it working for now by closing and re-opening the screen, or just moving it back and forth several times. I’m interested to see if doing this would fix for me as well, though I’m not too convinced it will as pressing any harder on the key or around the area doesn’t seem to have much effect.
If the screws loosening themselves over time is a concern, I might recommend putting a small dab of BLUE threadlocker on the end of the threads of each screw. Blue is important here, as red is intended for permanent applications and requires very high heat to remove.
My delete key also stopped working reliably. Some weeks/months ago it stopped registering very briefly, a couple of times. I surmised that it was a transient software issue. But this morning it got worse. Didn’t register at all despite rebooting and pressing many times.
I tried pushing down on the case and tweaking it gently. This got the key intermittently working again. But I don’t want to bend my laptop. My case screws are tight.

I realized that we can test the delete key in the BIOS setup menu (advanced page, then edit the “battery charge limit” setting, which is a number input field). When the key works, you can forward-delete digits. (For me, it was pretty intermittent.) I believe this lets us rule out a software or operating system issue without time-consuming OS troubleshooting!
I did this. I wouldn’t call any of these screws loose, but some were barely snug, and I made them a little tighter. Now the delete key is working 100% reliably, at least for now.
Expecting the inevitable and out of warranty, I ordered a new keyboard anyway.
Also having this issue; it started just a few hours ago, out of the blue.
I also thought it was software, so I restarted. It began working again, then stopped working again. Now it works again. At one point, really pressing into the key seemed to work.
My laptop shipped in Oct 2023, and it’s now Dec 2024, so I’m quite certain I’m out of warranty. I’ll attempt the tightening of screws when I’m feeling up to it, and will see if that works. Regardless of the outcome, I’ll report back.
Framework should really be covering anyone who has this problem, warranty or not. At the very least, they should publicly acknowledge the problem, post a guide on how to potentially remedy it, and extend warranty claims to anyone for whom the solution doesn’t work.

As mentioned above i am also affected by the problem and tried to fix it myself. I could get it to work temporarily by lifting/pressing the key hard but after a few minutes to hours the problem reappeard. Over time the frequency the problem appeared increased. In the end i couldn’t get it working even temporarily. After contacting support they asked me to disassemble the top cover/keyboard and take photos of the connectors. I noticed that after reassembly the key worked again and the problem frequency decreased. I disassembled it again and cleaned the keyboard-connector with a brush and reattached it under high pressure. For now the problem is gone for 3 days in a row, not sure if it stays like that. But to me it looks like a problem with the cable-connector…
Incredibly frustrated with Framework to see the responses from their support. A teensy company like this really shouldn’t be giving their customers the brush-off, and I’m deeply disappointed.
Framework should be offering free-of-charge solutions to this issue - they should certainly be offering support in the form of in-house troubleshooting and guides. The dismissive behavior other users have reported is absolutely horrible.
Anyway, I’m dealing with this as well. The delete key is no longer working. Hard stop, no period of semi-functionality. I’ll test the suggestion with the screws and see if that’s it.
Not to be the devil’s advocate (I landed on this thread because I am suffering from the same problem), but may I recommend you evaluate their support based on your experience rather than someone else’s? Because it sounds like you have not contacted their support yet.
I don’t want to dismiss other people’s experiences, but I think we can have a more constructive conversation if we report our own direct interactions. My two cents.
Given the promise of modularity, ease of maintenance and repairability, Framework team should produce a hardware repair guide for keyboard key - down to individual key level. It can involve purchasing exact matching key parts, etc…
Or else, Framework laptop is compromising their promise on the productivity of their computers. Users like me who wants to use delete/insert keys and for anyone who wishes to use it for system/bios level operation needs proper resolution for this problem.
Just remapping to another keys defeats the purpose on productivity and such solution assumes that the computer will not be shared to anyone else.
It gets super annoying when the expected key did not work, despite proper cleaning and maintenance.
Framework, should not put us all in dark. A proper repair guide need to be issued to resolve this issue officially. Indirectly pushing us to purchase new key board or key cover is not a sustainable practice.
I was in the same boat. After ~2 years without any issues, the delete key started to work less and less reliable over a period of 2-3 months, in the end barely a stroke was recognized.

The solution proposed by Cole_Gibson (tightening screws on bottom of input cover) has worked for me, too! Thanks a lot for that!
The delete key is working again 100% for a week now, and I also second Cole_Gibson’s impression, that after tightening the overall typing experience improved quite a bit!
I strongly recommend to give that solution a try before ordering a new input cover.
Sadly my delete key also stopped working reliably. I can’t find a pattern on it though. I tried running # libinput debug-events to see its outputs, and, from what it seems, the key doesn’t register at all. All other keys work perfectly fine though.
