Broken fan, how to get replacement

Hi,

I’m having issues with the fans in my GFX-module. They are getting very noisy, and I’m not talking normal fan noise, but a kind of scraping or knocking sound (hard to describe).

I’ve taken the GFX-module apart and thoroughly cleaned the machine, but the noise just slowly gets worse. At first it was just the left one (I think) intermittently, but now it’s most of the time, and the other one is starting to make similar sounds once in a while.

Typical broken fan noise, that I know from my previous machines. Cleaning it usually improves it a little when it’s still intermittent, but usually not for long. Probably broken bearings.

I’ve thought about replacing the fans, but unfortunately the one that is broken isn’t available right now. I’ve also filled out the form for a support request, but since I’ve not received a confirmation mail, I assume the request didn’t arrive for some reason.

I just want to replace this noisy fan. Under warranty if possible, but I’d buy two sets of fans if I could, since laptop-fans usually seem to last about 18-24 months, and I’ve accepted that I have to replace them regularly. At least it’s not like my old Laptop, where I had to replace the whole cooling assembly, because they didn’t sell the fan without it, I could easily buy 4 fans for the price of the cooling assembly of the old Laptop.

Any ideal how else to get compatible fans?

you can buy new fans here left and right:

Framework | Framework Laptop 16 Graphics Module Fan

Only right fan gen 1 is in stock atm.

left gen 1

left gen 2

right gen 2

are atm out of stock

At the moment I don’t have the account badge necessary to list yet on the community market, but when I do (I’m working on it atm) I was planning on listing my graphics module if you would be interested, it has minor cosmetic damage to the frame but the rest if it is in excellent condition (including the fans)

what i can see is he is only interested in 2 new fans. So maybe you can sell the fans or just simply sell it as it is to some 1 who wants to gpu and fans. IDK if this user here needs 2nd gpu when he only needs the fans.

Unfortunately the left fan is the one that is broken.
Since it’s been less than 2 years, I’ve contacted support.

This is really unfortunate because my left fan is also SEVERELY damaged. Not intermittent at all. Continuous buzzing-grinding noise and the entire laptop is vibrating. I just want NEW FANS, but literally all of them being out of stock is… very annoying. And my FW16 is really quite out of warranty.

If a component is not available in the shop, it is worth contacting support. They sometimes have access to components that are out of stock in the shop.

I tried and they told me to bugger off ‘cause I’m out of warranty. I bought a Framework for its repairability too. Am I expected to just keep an entire second Framework in reserve for if parts fail? This is really disheartening.

I dont think they really told you to bugg off.

You won’t get a fan for free if warranty is ended, you will have to stand for the cost. So you probably didnt mention about you paying for fan? Then ofcourse they will say no, try and tell them the fans are out of stock on website and is there by any chance they can ship any new fans directly from taiwan to you for cost on web store.

No, I explicitly said I wanted to buy a fan so I could avoid wasting the module by throwing it away. They explicitly pointed me to the website and said to just wait.

Can you open up the metal around the fan and get to the fan inside. Is it rivetted or small screws?
If you can get to it and find a make/model number, you might be able to source the fan elsewhere. Someone will have made the fan for FW.

Well then they decided to go by that rule sadly.

Makers of the fan for FW is cooler master and is probably special made.

How i know it is because photos of fans being sold on fw website shows the cooler master logo on the fans.

Also the fans are not attached/screwed down on cooler. It’s screwed down on the expansion bay/gpu module. So all you need to do is unscrew them there and disconnect the cable and flip the fan over to probably see cooler master logo.
