Can't boot from USB

I have a FW13 AMD 7640u. I have been using an SSD that previously had Fedora installed, with no issues - have never tried to boot from USB before. I now need to redo the disk as a dual-boot with Windows. I have Ventoy installed on a Kingston USB thumb drive. The boot flag is set, and it boots with no issues on several other systems.

The system can see the USB flash, but will not boot from it. I can not force it to do so in the UEFI interface - the flash is not selectable. I have tried every trick recommended in this forum and others, including resetting UEFI, plugging in the USB drive after powerup, disabling the internal battery, probably others. Secure boot is disabled on the laptop.

Why can’t it simply boot from the USB flash drive?

Should have mentioned - I have upgraded the BIOS to 3.09. In addition, I have tried moving the USB-A card to each of the 4 available ports. All with the same result. I’m trying with a different USB key next, although this one boots on every other system I own.

Final update - I was able to get it to boot using a different flash drive (third one I tried). It is Sandisk Cruzer Glide that also runs Ventoy and was formatted using the same method as the first drive. I have no explanation.

That’s very strange. :confused: I’ve never encountered a problem like that myself, unless you count not being able to boot directly from an SD card on any of the three (non-Framework) machines I’ve tried recently. (I was able to boot from the same SD card when in a USB adapter, on all three machines. Just not from the SD reader built into those machines.)

I personally have never used ventoy; but some software solutions do funny business with how they do the disk format which laptops don’t like.

I suggest taking a USB key and formatting it Fat32. Then take the ISO image and extract it to the key. Not DD - literally copy all content.

With any luck the laptop will see it as boot target and load content from the efi directory to boot up.
