Can't use USB keyboards in BIOS

I have an AMD 7040 mainboard running in a CoolerMaster case. I can enter the BIOS, but I can’t change anything!

When I enter the BIOS, the USB A keyboard works intermittently or not at all. I’ve tried all sorts of combinations of keys, including Ctr and Fn, but can only get the computer to respond intermittently. Not reliably enough to actually control anything.

I tried two different keyboards. They both work 100% when the computer is booted. I tried connecting them using the Framwork USB A adapter, and also using a USB A dongle. No difference.

Latest BIOS: version 3.05

Anyone have any ideas for something else to try?

Found a $2 keyboard at the thrift store… THAT works.

So the AMD BIOS appears super finicky about keyboards:

  • Retro Model F: doesn’t work.
  • Plain ol Arctic Fox: doesn’t work
  • Microsoft wireless keyboard plugged in through USB dongle: doesn’t work
  • Any keyboard plugged in through my old USB hub: doesn’t work
  • Ancient Dell with slightly corroded USB A cord: works!

I’m guessing the Microsoft keyboard didn’t work because it wants to emulate a mouse too?

If you’re going to try to run the AMD mainboard in an external case, make sure you have a keyboard that will work with it. That’s not as easy as it sounds!
