Anyone got any ideas on how I could go about creating a CFexpress Type B card reader expansion card for the Framework Laptop 16? Type B cards have been a common standard for higher end mobile cameras, and it would be nice to have one like the SD card reader.
CFexpress Type B cards are significantly bigger than SD cards, and the SD card reader barely fits in the expansion card slot. I’m not sure how that would work.
You’d probably have to have such a reader extend below the laptop. There is a little bit of space as long as you place the laptop on a flat surface due to the rubber feet.
Probably not enough space for the card reader, plus the PCB it needs to be mounted on, plus a bit of padding between the PCB and the buttom of the laptop, plus at least a small outer shell for robustness and shielding.
I suppose there aren’t likely to be through-hole mounted sockets so will all require sitting on a wider PCB.
Honestly, I would be fine with it bulging out a bit, the conscience really just comes from being able to attach it and not having to plug another device in everytime I move around. And it gives a lot of flexibility if I want to use it on my lap instead of a table.
it could be an expansion bay module, and you could also support cfast and cfx type a as well, and maybe an internal m.2 2230 if you were clever with the packaging
