Community Tariff Discussion Thread

Without getting into politics, there’s a saying you’ve probably heard, apparently originally about Oklahoma: “if you don’t like the weather here, wait five minutes, it’ll change.” I suspect it will apply to the tariffs as well. Though it’ll likely take a little more than five minutes.

The question is, are the customers willing to pay 30%-40% more at the first place.

Exactly! We over here in the EU have nice progressive right-to-repair friendly legislation (I can now buy parts for my Samsung phone for example because the EU forced them to), unlike the US, highly suggest Framework move their headquarters to the EU.

Certainly fewer than before, but if you need a laptop then you need a laptop, and now a Framework might suddenly be cheaper than a Chinese brand with the same specs. Existing taxes across the globe (sales tax in some US states, VAT in Europe) have also not stopped people from buying gadgets.
And the FW Desktop was very competitively priced for AI work to begin with. Anyway, just my two cents of hope.

The other question is do they have a choice

Hello all, I have a pre-order for the Framework Desktop. I am quite new to PC building. I am wondering if discussions here about the laptops affected by tariffs are relevant to the upcoming desktop roll outs (I’m in batch 7), or if there is any distinct impact on desktops of this policy. Any resources appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: I was asked to remove the political content from this post. I wasn’t sure what that meant, so I removed the term “deranged” to describe the tariffs. I disagree with this point of moderation and the implication from community moderator 2disbetter that my comment resembles campaign or political discussion.

All please focus your discussions on Framework products. That is why this community forum exists. This is not the political discussion group, campaign headquarters, or US administration criticism section. (Apply this to any country and their policies interchangeably.) Politics don’t belong here.

The reason for this is that we want this space to enable Framework customers in getting the most out of their Framework product(s). Politics are large and they easily overshadow that goal. We understand that things are charged right now, but ask you to be respectful and to continue keeping the Framework forums one of the best resources on getting the most out of Framework products.

Failure to adhere to this will see this thread locked.

Are you a US citizen? than yes if the tariffs are still in effect at shipping time, what the cost would be is up to Framework. But this is just mostly speculation, as alot can change in the coming months.

I personally don’t see those tariffs getting removed, may be lowerd if your lucky*.

*(and that just happened, but only 90days. Not long enough for the Framework Desktop, so who knows at that time)

US customers can contact their representatives and congress men and can tell them, how bad this situation is, so they get a sense what is going on in the country.

This is a nice article about the changeable tariff situation.

Honestly, this is very typical chaos.

But at this point he is just doing a Pump and dump, like the world economy is some sort of crypto scheme. Now he is reversing, higher tariffs agian. :face_exhaling:
I’m done trying to predict the future. Only thing i can say with certainty it’s gonna be some chaotic years.

I’m sure that Framework, is preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. Like any business/company does.

if i preorder Framework | Framework Laptop 13 Mainboard (AMD Ryzen™ AI 300 Series) then the price goes up due to tariffs by the time it ships, do i get the locked in price grandfathered or can the preorder be canceled or something?

it says

Secure your pre-order with a fully-refundable $100 deposit now. Pre-orders ship when all items are in stock.

which implies that until i pay the full amount, under such tariff volatility, the price could go up?

Very hard to tell right now, the price can go up. if that happens, you will have the option to cancel your preorder. We would not charge the increased price to your payment method on file without informing you.

great, thanks---- but the deposit be forfeit? somewhere in the essay I think someone said they’d be refundable in the event of tariff based price volatility, but that seems to violate the spirit of a deposit

you can always cancel your pre-order and receive the deposit back.

If your card is charged and the unit is shipped, that won’t be possible, in this case you will have up to 30 days to return the unit and receive your refund.

Maybe it is better for Framework to leave the base prices as they are and add a tariff surcharge instead, like other companies do. These surcharges can be adjusted on a daily basis and everyone is able to see, how much this tariff nonsense impacts the total price.
