Here’s a thread I’m making for some last minute (educated) price speculation on Framework Laptop 12, because I want to buy it and haven’t seen much so far. So, my guesses are 339-449 for the i3 DIY edition and 499-549 for the i5 DIY edition. This is because
Intel is probably almost giving away 13th Gen chips because of their poor reputation.
Framework wants to break into the education/K-12 space and needs competitive pricing for that to work out.
I doubt it’s as cheap as you are guessing, but I certainly hope it will be. That would put it in the price range where I can recommend it to people who simply want a laptop for casual browsing and office tasks with the added benefit of being easily repairable and upgradable.
There’s absolutely no way it’s going to be that cheap any more. Framework’s factories are in Taiwan. Add 30-40% on top of whatever you think is reasonable.
It’s either going to be amazing, or maybe something else. FW12 announcement on the 2nd of April, same day the tariffs were announced. Tariffs start on the 9th, same as the FW12 pre-orders. Generally, I don’t believe in coincidences, but wow.
Fair, I made an assumption based on the numbers on the first post that they were talking about USD.
Though I wonder if there will still be some impact on other countries as well if Framework has to ship from the US in some instances. (I think they drop ship from Taiwan, but not sure.)
Fair enough, I’m located in the EU. So yeah, I agree. I should also clarify I meant 399-449 for the i3. So, 32% Trump tarrifs included, I’d say:
US
549-599 for the i3
669-729 for the i5 (which gets dangerously close to the pre tarrif price of the 7640U FW13)
all laptops (atleast new ones) ship from Taiwan directly. Not sure about the refurb models but in general every laptop ships from there. accessories can ship from local warehouses
I do wonder if Framework will do some kind of price subsidization and say, charge 10% extra for everyone to soften the blow for Americans. I wouldn’t exactly be a fan as we aren’t the ones who voted for the orange boy, but they may do that nonetheless to stop their sales from dropping sharply.
Its a possibility but for small companies (not just talking about fw) this could cause bigger issues if those other incomes stop.
For bigger companies (like apple etc) i would see this as a real possibility starting from the next iphone later this year where they raise the prices all over to compensate the US prices. Won’t really affect them that much compared to smaller startups with more niche market
That’s a fair point, but I’m guessing that for Framework even more of their sales are from the US. So it would be fairly important to keep those from dipping.
To be honest, I don’t think they will be selling the FW 12 in the US at all, especially in the short-term. With a 32% tariff, it will be to expensive for what they are aiming for, as a Chromebook/School laptop replacement. That would be damaging the point and purpose why they made it in the first place.
There is not enough meat on the bones, for them to make any profit with those tariffs. And not only that, they will make a big lose with every sell they make. You just have to look at why they stopped selling the Intel Ultra 5 125H- en AMD Ryzen 5 7640U-processor on the FW 13, and that was because of the 10% baseline tariff that started from the 5th, tomorrow that will be a 32% tariff for US customers.
Getting an intel version would only make sense if FW would pass the savings on to the customers, eg the intel version would be at least 1/3 cheaper than the AMD version. Mostly because all intel’s CPU’s after gen. 9 (eg 10~13th gen) are atrocious crap and only good at generating heat in amounts totally disproportionate to their computing power.
Keep dreaming. If americans stop buying, more will be available to other regions, and we will happily buy. Also why subsidise the RICHEST and GREATEST and the most BESTest and smartest country in the world?
With Apple it doesn’t work that way. They set prices based on the perception of the brand in the respective country. Just look at the price lists; in many countries with much lower income iPhones are not only more expensive, but often disproportionately compared to other brands. All because Apple wants to strenghten their perception as luxury brand.
Geez, no need to get so toxic. I’m not even American myself. I’m just saying, purely because of how the industry orginated there the US probably has the biggest proportion of techies, who are most likely buy from Framework. Yes, I would love for them to just give the orange boy a taste of his own medicine and stop selling in the US, but Framework is a for-profit company at the end of the day and needs to consider their profits.
Sounds like a huge oversimplification. Yes, AMD is better, but not to the degree you’re making them out to be. And Raptor Lake is likely extremely cheap right now, so why not use it? Don’t base your entire opinion of a company’s products off clickbait Gamers Nexus thumbnails.
Tariff issues aside, I think those prices would be perfect given their pitch that these are for students or kids. I would buy a couple for my kids in a heartbeat if that was the price. But I suspect when framework says they are for kids, they did not intend it to mean the normal middle class kid. At least based on their existing product prices I do not see affordable prices for students and kids happening. Would love to be proven wrong.
