Compatibility/Upgrade for Framework Laptop 13 Pro

With the announcement of our new Framework Laptop 13 Pro, we wanted to create a thread gathering questions you had regarding compatibility and upgrades with the Framework Laptop 13. Drop your questions below and the team will try to answer as many as we can!

Hi,

the new chassi comes in two colour ways, can I mix and match to my hearts content?

Is that a question to Framework’s legal team?

Yes, as long as they are both pro parts!

if you want to mix and match graphite pro and original 13 silver parts, it’s better to ask and we can confirm the compatibility.

Will the Framework 13 Pro be available in the silver color as well or is it just graphite for now? Also when do we think parts might be available to upgrade a regular Framework 13?

Reading the compatibility guide, I see that it’s reported that upgrading to the haptic touchpad requires the full new input cover. This is disappointing both because of price and because it duplicates existing identical parts like the keyboard and fingerprint reader.

How incompatible is the haptic touchpad with the current (2nd gen) input cover? Would it be possible to modify the existing cover to install it in a secure manner?

If not, a minimal “haptic upgrade kit” (just the input cover + touchpad) would be a nice option. I do see the “DIY input cover kit”, but “no keyboard” isn’t an option, and it still includes the fingerprint reader. I’m not really sure what the point of the DIY kit vs the fully-assembled version then, since the it allows no additional config flexibility? I guess you can have the fun of installing the keyboard yourself, but that seems like a pretty minor difference to offer a separate listing over. It also doesn’t seem like I can order just the bare input cover frame. Either the DIY listing with options for no keyboard and fingerprint reader or the bare frame that I can order alongside the haptic touchpad would be fine methods to avoid the duplication (and hopefully lower price?). Is something like either of these logistically feasible?
Edit: See the “input cover frame”.

Also, do you plan to sell the color keyboards (gray/black, lavendar/black) blank like the black one?

The fingerprint reader situation is a bit confusing. There is no mention of it in the listing, although the photo shows it. I think it would make sense if that actually was just an input cover + touchpad, without the fingerprint reader.

will the touchscreen be compatible with the framework stylus from the 12? would be great if so!

  • Do the 4kg hinges fit the pro or are the pro hinges different.

  • Do the non 74Wh batteries fit the pro bottom cover.

  • Will the pro top cover be available separately (in case one only wanted to benefit from the potentially better wifi antennas).

  • I understand it right that I can just put the pro mid-plate (including new keyboard and touchpad) into an otherwise regular fw13 or does that absolutely need the pro bottom case.

My current plan (assuming the wifi antenna situation actually is significantly better which isn’t a high bar to clear) going from my stock 7840u I would first only upgrade the lid and mid-plate (with keyboard and touchpad). Then if/when my battery goes spicy get the bottom cover and 74wh battery. By my current understanding that should be possible.

Currently, everything on the configurator is Graphite. You you can build your own Silver Pro using the Silver Chassis and the mainboard of your choice!

Oh, nice. That would have saved a lot of typing.

Haptic touchpad is physically larger than the 1st gen and 2nd gen laptop 13 input covers, and there is a hub board on the pro version. Keyboards and fingerprint readers are not forward or backwards compatible either, that’s why you need to upgrade the entire input cover kit.

Colored keyboards (and input covers) should be available on the marketplace already!

fingerprint readers are not compatible across generations, keyboards are not compatible either.

Laptop 13 pro touchscreen does not support stylus usage :frowning:

I believe hinges should be compatible, but I’ll double check with the engineering teams.

Pro bottom cover is only compatible with 74Wh battery/

top cover will be available as a standalone item, both in silver and graphite!

not sure if I understand the last question. pro input cover (as a full part, including the new keyboard, new haptic touchpad and new fingerprint reader) is compatible with 13 laptops.

Ah, oh well. I expected as much from the photos.

Hm. Interesting. I thought I heard they were the same.

Nice. I did look, but I missed finding the “input cover frame”, so maybe I missed those too.

Thanks for the clarification!

Pro keyboards : https://frame.work/products/laptop13pro-keyboard?v=FRANQQ00A1 (compatible with pro input cover frames)

Okay, thank you. I think silver should be an option in the configuration page as well for those who want a pro silver option and don’t want to build it. I don’t mind building it as long as it’s not more expensive to do it that way.

Oh, yes, I saw those. I was asking about the colored keyboards with blank key-caps?

oh, got it. at the moment, blank keyboard is black only and the colorways are US English only.
