I have been examining and measuring photos of the different reviewers disassembling the framework desktop, especially when it comes to the heatsink. With no additional radiator options, I want to take advantage of the upgradeable fan; I really want to try using the 30mm Corsair RS Max or LX Max or Phantex T30 or even the 28mm Lian Li P28 fan for their excellent static pressure at minimal increase in sound…
I see the desktop has a fan shroud that seems to add 8mm in width for mounting fans, but the question for devs or reviewers or anyone who has a desktop on hand: can I mount a thicker fan using a thinner shroud option like Noctuas fan duct kit or something homemade… would a thicker fan even fit in this chassis (with or without the included stock shroud)?
Edit: easier question, what is the depth of the fan mounting shroud?
I want to mention first, that while Framework staff does sometimes post here, and answers some questions when they can, this forum is primarily a user forum. For you or anyone else new dropping by looking for info on the Framework Desktop. If you have a question that goes unanswered here, you could try contacting Framework support, frame.work/support. Though, for very particular details such as this, I wouldn’t think Framework support agents would have anything more than is available in Framework’s github or Framework’s announcement posts. As for reviewers, I doubt anyone from the media outlets that got to actually handle a Framework Desktop at this early of a point are on here.
Luckily, I don’t think any of them are needed!
Looks like Framework got ya, via the info they uploaded to their github.
I mean, you have the depth of the shroud to work with if you can make a replacement. Whether 3D printed, lasercut, or hell, glued strips of Balsa wood (it’s a real option, easy to shape / soft).
Looks like the shroud is listed as 7.32mm. That’s the play you have to work with. A fan up to 7.32mm thicker should work. If you want the best most controlled airflow you’ll want to create a replacement shroud, or otherwise shim the extra space so that air must go only where you want it.
Excellent - I had browsed the github but hadn’t seen “More Pages” at the bottom of that document. Thank you so much! Looks like I can fit the T30 with a replacement shroud.
For anyone else who finds this post looking to experiment with airflow, I’m considering using a 92mm fan at the front with an adjusted version of this 60mm length shroud (it needs to be reduced down to around 20mm to fit, still examining schematics) to act as a blower intake 92 mm Fan Duct to 10 x 90 mm Output and 60 mm Height by gtorelly | Download free STL model | Printables.com - if anyone else is interested in using their desktop as a workstation and sound isn’t a factor, I’d love cooling advice to get the most out of this APU as possible. Thoughts?
