There seems to be the option to mount a fan on the front. Hast anyone seen any detailed information in this?
Where do you see that in photos? Considering the 120mm on the side a front fan seems like an odd placement
Yeah, It turned out that we had plenty of cooling already. It’s nice because it now leaves more room for fingers to install the SSD.
You can populate a fan on there, but I doubt it’ll do much.
Hi,
I thought the front fan was 40mm.
Just got my Batch1 Framework Desktop and the front fan mounting holes are most definitely for 80mm.
I don’t have an 80mm fan on hand to put in, but I have a 92mm and 92 is definitely too large.
Thought I would share since I saw even some reviews state 92mm. It is in fact 80mm.
I believe i heard this in a couple reviews, too
I’m just putting that information here in case someone comes across this thread.
Most reviews I saw said 80mm. I wish framework provided more details about the framework desktop case internal dimensions.
I asked chatGPT and it said 92mm saying “Multiple reviews point toward 92 mm as the intended front-fan size”. This is incorrect. Useless AI.
The chatGPT response quoted both this thread and the below tomshardware review to conclude it was 92mm.
Funnily enough the chatGPT response also linked to the phoronix review that actually tested with 80mm fan and the ifixit guide for installing the 80mm fan.
Yep it’s an 80mm. I have a few laying around so I threw one in and it fit perfectly.
I wish someone tested how the front fan affects the rpms on the main fan, or how often it spins up. The only way I’d want to bother with a front fan is if it could make the system quieter on average.

I might do that when I get some time, I have a db meter somewhere around here.
Oh man, that’d be awesome! Though, I suspect one reason sites don’t do it is it probably takes a bit of testing to really tell if the second fan quells fan spikes.
I’m not going to do anything too scientific, I’ll just run a couple stress tests with the fan unplugged vs plugged and see what the dba is. I’m just curious if there’s any significant difference.
Sounds way more reasonable =). Looking forward to seeing what you find!
I installed a front fan using the iFixit guide: How to Install an 80mm Fan in your Framework Desktop - iFixit Repair Guide
I did not like the hot air blown out the front of the case towards me. After adding the front fan all the hot air goes out the back, and the front of the case is much cooler to the touch.
I used a Noctua 80mm fan that I had left over from a previous project. I did not notice any acoustic differences, but this is my perception, I didn’t measure. I kept the fan speeds at the BIOS defaults: 25% minimum at all times, ramps from 25% to 100% over 60C to 100C.
What model/brand 80mm fan did you guys install?
Did anyone install an ARGB 80mm fan? Would that work?

I also found some conflicting information regarding the orientation, the official iFixit guide says “orient it such that the fan is blowing into the Desktop, not away”, and on the ArsTechnica page it says “Noctua noticed some temperature improvements when adding an 80 mm exhaust fan to the front of the system”…
So, which way is correct, mounting the fan to blow air inside the unit? Or mount it the other way around to take out the air?

I used a Noctua 80mm fan. I am not sure which specific model, it was in my parts bin.
I oriented my fan as an intake because I don’t want hot air blowing at me from the front of the case.
I’m curious to know, for anyone using a front fan, how it may affect the PSU heat dispersion? Another way to ask the same is question is, if you have a front fan, do you notice improvements to the frequency or speed of the PSU fan spin? Just trying to understand if it improves the noise issue
I received my desktop a few days ago and have exactly the same question. I will try to get a fan and just try it out. I mean it can’t get worse with that PSU.
I did not hear the PSU fan before or after adding the front fan.
