I just replaced my spicy pillow this afternoon. It kinda sucks but now I may lock into the OG Framework 13 for a few more years. My 7840u still is really snappy.

I hope they release a version without a touchscreen. My screen is great, and I don’t need touch functionality. What’s the point of wanting to be eco-friendly if you’re then forced to buy something you don’t need?
The battery is a different matter. Mine has served me well and will probably need replacing soon.
There is very little difference in material use between touch and non touch and it does save having multiple skus and configurations of assembly lines and stuff.
I still hope they will sell some rejects where only the touch part is broken but the rest is fine to non touch users like you and me but that depends on their yields.
I think that came across a bit wrong.
The option to purchase a monitor with touchscreen support directly from Framework is amazing.
Since I own a standard FW13 and just want to swap out the chassis, I’d appreciate it if there were a chassis version that came with all components except the monitor. That would save me a lot of money, since the monitor would otherwise just be sitting around unused. That’s what’s been holding me back from buying the full chassis so far.
Buying the parts individually might end up costing about the same…

looks like there is pricing now. absolutely unbelievable pricing. such a joke. you can buy two MacBook neos for the cost of the chassis and input cover.
not in my market, the neo is also in a different market segment.
The price reflect my expectations, maybe 10 to 20% higher.

my chassis is pitting and has a bunch of dings and scratches and I was looking forward to the idea of retiring the chassis for now and one day just upgrading the main board and putting the original back in the old chassis for my kid. but just upgrading the chassis is literally the cost of a whole new good laptop it’s wack pricing.
US pricing puts it higher than the cost of a Macbook Neo, but not double. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still expensive. But it’s not just the chassis and input cover. It includes the following:

there should be an option without the screen and battery. I already upgraded the screen on my original and have the bigger battery.
when the time comes to rebuild with the old chassis I already have the old screen so I’d just need to buy a new battery for the pro and a main board with ram and ssd.

It’s less expensive than buying the parts separately, but it’s still very expensive. When compared to a base-model FW 13 Pro priced at 2255 CAD, it could make sense to upgrade your existing FW.
Note: We do not have final pricing for these parts available, just greyed-out boxes on the website. We also do not know if the price for kit listed includes the input cover or if that is an additional 170$ or 249$. It seems to depend on the keyboard chosen (ex., the models with the coloured keys cost more), but we do not know if that’s included in the full-priced kit or an extra cost as we cannot place orders or add the kits to cart yet.
I imagine there will be. The complete kit actually says that it’s currently listed to gauge interest. Probably to see if it’s even worth it for them to make that kit an option. As with every other one of their machines, I imagine the top and bottom cover will both be available separately eventually.

You forgot that the $759 price doesn’t include the $179 input cover, it’s a separate cost in the selector underneath on the same page. If you add up all the parts on their pages you get $938 for the graphite. $978 for the silver. (That’s with the cheapest US English keyboard option).
…Also, it’s only $599 more for the cheapest Core Ultra 3 with 16GB RAM and a 500GB SSD. Seems there’s very little reason to upgrade rather than buy the newer model.
Unless the pricing is much lower than the estimates above, I’ll probably not do the upgrade.
Two big reasons are:

For all the parts that will be replaced, selling them into the secondary market is gonna suck. First, there will be a flood of same parts arriving on the market at the same time, but second, the only real demand for such parts is to replace damaged parts on prior FW13s. It won’t make much economic sense to buy them to build a complete laptop around an old mainboard.

There will be a Frankenstein situation for complete FW13 conversions to Pros sold in the secondary market. I will have to look carefully at any conversions to see which parts were converted and which were not when trying to price them. And then there is the question of whether the conversion labor was done well or if something was damaged in the process.
I’d feel more secure buying a prebuilt FW13 Pro or prebuilt FW13 than a Frankenstein conversion.
Personally my plan is to wait and see if the price of the conversion kit comes down over time, and then when my current FW13’s battery dies, then I might buy the whole kit or part of the kit (creating a Frankenstein FW13 Pro that I will probably have trouble selling later).

If you’re concerned about the user breaking something, well that just applies to every Framework device on the secondary market. The vast majority of the time, the user doing it is the only option for repairs or upgrades. And some people will have poked around for fun. The FWL13 to 13 Pro parts which fit have been made to be perfectly compatible I’m sure. So upgrading to a 13 Pro part will incur no greater risk than a standard 13 repair or upgrade.
Well, while it is true that any Framework device could be damaged during the upgrade process, the likelihood of doing so is lower for simpler upgrades such as swapping the SSD or RAM versus more intensive upgrades such as the chassis upgrade kit parts swap or a mobo replacement.
In other words, I would feel much safer buying a FW13 or FW13 Pro used from a person who says they bought it prebuilt and did not touch it or bought the DIY kit and says they only installed the RAM and SSD than a FW13 Pro conversion where I know that the owner had to have taken apart quite a lot of the laptop.

I may be misunderstanding things here, or there seems to be some confusion. In any case, there seems to be confusion, someone may address that.
There are 2 options: entire chassis kit https://frame.work/fr/en/products/framework-laptop-13-pro-chassis-kit-silver and much cheaper upgrade kit https://frame.work/fr/en/products/laptop13pro-bottom-cover-upgrade-kit which changes just the required components (bottom cover, speakers, battery, input cover) and no display, etc..
In any case, most benefits come from CPU/RAM upgrade and makes no sense to upgrade all of that for 13wh or whatever. Keep in mind that you can still use 61wh battery (still an upgrade if you’re still on 55wh). Although I wouldn’t mind if they released a new battery with the new chemistry in the original form factor.
