CPU runs 30°C hotter when Battery is installed (Video)

My point is that according to the sensor, the CPU is still plowing 90W through the die but the temp stays much lower

I also tried s-tui and I see live power consumption, but not the limits

Maybe in this mode the load distribution is more even so the max temperature is much lower at a given wattage

Be that as it may, how can I proceed here? It seems to me that AMD does not support PL1/PL2 but PPT instead, which also doesn’t help me all that much. Can anybody of you maybe also install Mission Center (or anything else showing power usage) and check what their Systems report? preferrably under Fedora, to have some semblance of comparability?

Currently I assume Fedora is the problem, and you don’t have a hardware fault. This is good news as it means your problem is solvable.

One solution is to switch to Ubuntu. I suppose it depends on how much you are OK not using Fedora for now, and how much you don’t mind not knowing the specific cause.

Sorry I mean PPT. I thought PL1/SPPT and PL2/FPPT were interchangeable. You can use ryzenadj to deliberately set a lower CPU power i.e. 54W however that’ll reset when you restart or (un)plug the charger. You can also use Smokeless_UMAF to set the power limits in BIOS but I don’t think it’s necessary. I don’t know an other way of showing (not editing) the SPPT and FPPT values. If you are on Windows you can use HWINFO to see the percentage of actual percentage vs SPPT/FPPT/SPL even on idling so you can then calculate these limits. For some reason using ryzenadj to show the power limits throws an error

$ sudo ryzenadj -i

no compatible ryzen_smu kernel module found, fallback to /dev/mem
Unable to get memory access
Unable to init power metric table: -5, this does not affect adjustments because it is only needed for monitoring.

i have a suggestion to use an “expert”. to understand this, you need to read the fix i (or rather claude did) did using claude. 3.5mm microphone detection - #44 by leverler6

to start, post the problem in detail, to ask if claude can attempt to scan for the problem. if in doubt, repost the result here to get more opinions about whether claude is right. chatgpt could also work. who knows, maybe there are some real bugs even FW don’t know about :zany_face:

this generic AI-Slop Advertisment does between Zero and absolutely nothing to further this thread, but thank you for your invaluable insight.

I started with Ubuntu, but switched to Arch Based Manjaro on recommendations, then from there to Fedora because it’s “the best-supported Distro” for Framework. I don’t want to switch again, even more so as I really despite snap.

I’m with you that it’s probably not a hardware issue, though I want to understand what possibly causes this over-wattage. I’m still hoping for somebody on here to check for him- or herself what the reported consumption is on a fedora with performance, default and powersave profile
