Dell WD22TB4 dock and FW13 AMD AI 300

Hi,

I have a Dell WD22TB4 dock with two 4K monitors (Dell U2718Q). I have connected a 10G NIC (UACC-Adapter-RJ45-USBC-10GE) to one of the two TB4 ports the dell dock. I ran an iperf3 speedtest between the laptop and the server. The download speed is 2.05 Gbits/sec while the upload is 616 Mbits/sec.

I was expecting a poor upload speed due to the 4k monitors but the download speed is also very poor. This is in contrast to what somebody demonstrated here.

If i directly connect the USB NIC to the TB4 port on the laptop then i get a full 10Gb speed.

Anybody can help on what could be the issue with the dock?

OS: NixOS unstable

Thanks

I’ve got a FW13 AMD 7040 running Debian Forky/Testing and a WD22TB4, I’ll swap around some cables and see how it fares. (My NIC is a 4-port Intel X710T4 in a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure, showing 20 Gb/s = 2 lanes * 10 Gb/s in boltctl, that might invalidate the comparison between setups.)

I have used Linux fwupdmgr to update firmware for the components in the WD22TB4. Have you done that recently/would you try it?

Yes, I did update the firmware on the dock prior to testing.

I unplugged both the monitors and still the speeds were poor. I am not sure if the Ubiquiti device doesnt play well with the dock or the dock doesnt play well with the laptop.

Most people don’t have spare thunderbolt 4 cables lying around, but maybe the limitation is in the cable from the dock (unless it is integrated into the dock).

Clearly the adapter works when plugged in directly, so the suspicion would be on the TB4 dock. Even without the monitors it still isn’t improving speed so that says it is not a bandwidth issue.

This might be something that has to be taken up with Dell since they are the vendor of the device.
