DIY build recommendations

I’m planning a Framework 16 build for amateur/hobbyist audio production and data analysis. Looking for sanity checks from the community here because my knowledge is very limited. Don’t hold back. You won’t hurt my feelings.

Currently rocking a 2010 MacBook Pro  so naturally an upgradeable laptop that can last a while is in my wheelhouse.

Use case:

  • Multitrack audio recording/mixing
  • R data analysis (nothing taxing right now, but who knows what I’ll get into in the future)
  • Microsoft Office / general productivity
  • Shared machine with my fiancée (Windows user), so Windows 11 is the OS
  • No gaming, no discrete GPU needed currently
  • Will probably want to drive an external display along with laptop display.
  • Long-term ownership target: 10+ years

Planned build:

  • CPU: Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (DIY Edition)
  • RAM: 2×16GB DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM, Crucial or Kingston matched kit
  • SSD: SK Hynix Platinum P41 1TB
  • Expansion cards: 3× USB-C, 2× USB-A, 1× DisplayPort
  • GPU module: None (expansion bay shell)
  • Power adapter: Third-party 100W USB-C PD
  • OS: Windows 11 Pro

Specific questions:

  1. Am I missing any compatibility/efficiency considerations?
  2. Is this overkill/underkill?
  3. Anyone running pro audio (Reaper, or other) on the Framework 16 with Ryzen AI
  4. Any issues with audio interfaces on this platform?

Appreciate any feedback. Thanks Framework community!

You might want to consider skipping the Display Port expansion card in favour of USB-C - you’ll get Display Port capability with it anyway, just needs the right cable.

I understand audio is covered by an audio interface, which is why you didn’t get the respective expansion card?

Thanks for the reply Tade.

I might still get a 3.5 mm port for convenient headphone listening without involving an interface. But otherwise yes, the interface would hook up via USB.

Good point on the DP port! I’ll just plan to use usb-c and get a cable appropriate for that.
