The APU temp will reach 80C so my fans ramp up and task manager shows DWM is at 100% utilization of the APU. The utilization goes down for a few few seconds to minutes then comes back up.
What can I do about it? It’s doing work for other applications like the web browser but it will still be high temps when not doing anything.
Are you experiencing some sort of issue or are you bothered by the fans turning on? Also, are you monitoring the CPU usage through Windows Task Manager?
80C is not a dangerous or problematic temperature for your CPU/APU, but if you’re worried about mitigating fan noise, there are some third party apps out there that allow you to control your fans (like the excellent ‘Framework Control’ software created by a Framework user).
I don’t have anything helpful to say about the dektop window manager executable potentially using so much processing power. More information about how you’re using your machine when this occurs could be instructive.
I’m not bothered by the fans running when playing a videogame. I am bothered by them when they are not doing anything noteworthy.
I know 80C isn’t harmful, it’s an indicator of what is going on and why I cited it as a data point. I have no desire to make a custom curve that makes them spin slower at these temps though.
I already have Framework control and that’s how I was monitoring APU temps. Task manager shows CPU usage for dwm and Chromium as being below 10%, overall CPU not higher than 20%.
Definitely going to look into this further, just seeing if anyone might know something. I think this is a windows issue, not a framework issue but Microsoft forums are worse than useless.
