Do USB-C Expansion Cards get warm or even hot?
Please tell us the material you’re referring to. Thanks in advance!
I’m new to the Framework-world. I ordered a FW12 with grey plastic USB-C cards. Now I’m thinking to switch to aluminium for the better heat dissipation. Well, this only makes sense if it really is aluminium and not plastic that ist aluminum-coloured.
The regular, non-storage USB-C expansion cards do not get hot (based on my experience with 4 USB-C Aluminum expansion cards).
However, storage USB-C expansion cards do get hot (I got the 250gb Framework expansion card which comes only in Aluminum, AFAIK). But, this phenomenon is not unique to the FW expansion cards; my 500gb ADATA USB-C flash drive also gets equally hot.
USB-C and USB-A expansion ports are basically just expansion cables, there’s no reason for them to get hot, other than proximity to a potentially hot laptop case.
The aluminium expansion ports are really aluminium, not painted plastic.
