External displays stopped working - and now working again ?!

Hi,

  • Windows 11 (24H2 and 25H2)
  • Laptop 16 AMD 7040 with and without AMD Radeon™ RX 7700S
  • BIOS Version/Date INSYDE Corp. 03.07, 27/08/2025

After working well for a long time, my Gigabyte M32U connected via USB3 (alternate mode) (in port 1) went dark. And it would also not work on the USB port of my AMD Radeon™ RX 7700S.

It all worked again today after two days of trying to figure out why my FW16 did not detect monitors any resolve it.

Now I wonder how I can avoid a repeat of this happening. I have seen some “ monitor glitches happening in the past. Usually a quick restart (with BIOS reset) resolved the issue. But…

I re-installed my AMD Radeon™ RX 7700S (I removed it some time ago because I did not notice and did not need its performance), and the device manager ihowing it “working normally”. But when I connect the monitor to the micro-USB connector on its back, no monitor is detected. The monitor briefly showed a popup with no signal.

When I inserted this Framework micro-USB to HDMI adapter in my FW16 it showed up in the device manager showing it “working normally”. It appeared under the “USB connection managers” as a UCM-UCSO ACPI device”.
However, when I plugged in the HDMI cable, the entry disappeared from the device manager. And no external display was detected. The monitor briefly showed a popup with no signal.
In some in some instances Windows would pop-up titled “ USB” with a message that “Display connection might be limited.” In hindsight this could have been because I was accidentally using port 5. (Which does not support video, need to use 1, 2 or 4.)

What I did to get to the current state (where the USB3 alternate mode video is working but the AMD Radeon™ RX 7700S its USB ports shows no monitor.

All of the above stays the same after:

  • Removed all expansion cards (USB-A, 2 x 2.5 Gb/s Ethernet).
  • Updating the BIOS to .24.
  • Updating windows to 25H2.
  • Reinstalling the Framework 16 driver package
  • Resetting the BIOS to defaults (F9) and saving (F10) multiple times.
  • Disconnecting the battery for 10+ minutes and then reconnecting again (and resetting the BIOS).

Thank you.

Best regards,

Alcindo

Have you checked if other devices consistently work with your external display since this started happening? And have you tried connecting your FW to different external displays since this started happening? That would be the first place I’d start to check, doing that will tell you where to start looking

I have another HDMI monitor which worked fine with other laptops.
And the M32U worked fine with other laptops.
But not with my FW16 for some time.
I did not notice any glitches on the other ports (two with 2.5 Gb/s Ethernet).
Now, everything is working, but there are some changes to last week.
I do not have the 2.5 Gb/s Ethernet ports connected. Power is now on port 5 instead of 1 (or 4). My GPU card is now connected again and the M32U is connected to the USB port on the back. (But it also worked when connected to port 1 again.)
What worries me is that the M32U - FW16 combination stopped working.
It is possible that when I tried to check HDMI I was using the wrong ports on the FW16. But I was aware that not all ports supported video. Therefore, I wonder if all my tests were on the wrong ports (5, as I avoided ports 3 and 6 for sure).
