Framework 16 does not output to external monitor when connecting via the graphics module

Hi all,

I received my Framework 16 back in November of 2025 and while it works without issues most of the time, one big issue I haven’t been able to figure out is what is causing my external monitor to not be detected by my Framework 16 when it’s plugged into the 5070’s usb-c port (the one located in the rear of the device).

A couple things I wanted point out:

  • Most of the time my external display is detected and works fine when plugged into the back of my Framework 16.
  • The problem sometimes appears after turning off my device and turning it back on.
  • When the issue appears, device manager reports it as “Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)”
  • The monitor is able to connect and work properly if I plug it into the side usb-c ports of my Framework 16 (that support video out)
  • Restarting my device, disconnecting all USB cables to my laptop, disconnecting the monitor from my laptop, and disconnecting the power from the monitor don’t improve or change the situation.
  • The only solution I’ve found so far was to run a BIOS update for the Framework but the issue has since re-appeared and I’m not sure what else to check for.

Sorry for the wordy post, just trying to get as much context out there as I can. Any insight or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I wish I had a solution for this as I have the same problem! I use an Anker 575 USB-C dock ( Anker 575 USB-C Docking Station (13-in-1) - Anker US ), however I also tried using a USB-C Triple Display adapter for JUST the monitors. Both will work but randomly it will stop. I try all of the steps you listed in your original post but the only thing that tends to work is to switch from connecting into the GPU into one of my USB-C expansion cards. Which, of course, doesn’t use the expensive GPU I bought but at least I can function again. I’ll switch back later to the GPU and it’ll work as if it had always worked. :man_facepalming:

All drivers are up to date, BIOS is up to date, and the only thing I haven’t tried is updating to Windows 11 26H1 from 25H2. Idk about everyone else, but I couldn’t work with the 25H2 update until Framework released the updated drivers and BIOS update. So I’m really nervous to update to 26H1, especially with all of the negative press about that release…

Any Framework staff or Community members have any suggestions for myself and @aaeriam ? Thanks in advance!
