External SSD gets very slow

Hello,

My external SSD Crucial X9 gets very slow and shows random speeds
Here is a benchmark that I ran for about 15min, with nothing else running on the computer.

Setup is :
Framework 13 intel 11th
Ubuntu 22 LTS
external SSD Crucial X9
Power supply Anker 65w

I have tried different ports and different disks but the problem persists

What could cause this behaviour ?

Thanks

Test on an other port :

and another test :

Can you confirm that this is not normal ?

Same external SSD, same computer, tested on windows 11

Same external SSD, different computer, mac :

Why is my experience with Framework so painful T_T

Well those speeds scream usb2, have you tried a different cable for the ssd?

Can you post the output of “lsusb -t” on linux and check if dmesg is complaining about something when the slowdowns happen?

Thanks for your answer I was losing hope.

I’ve tried with a different cable: same result

Here is the output of lsusb -t

 ~ » lsusb -t

The disk is on port Port 2

The output of dmesg while running a test, nothing happened when the speed dropped

By scrolling the dmseg output i’ve found these messages :

The cable is not bad (tested with a different one, and both are working well on mac), the error happens on other ports, for example port4 too.

Thank you for your help, I hope we’ll find a solution

Yeah so the cable is at least kinda ok if it connects at 10G

Maybe try if it does the same running windows 2 go or something

I tried again in windows and got trouble having my disk detected, then it was detected for a few minutes before being automatically disconnected…

I have this error in the device manager, even with the latest drivers installed.
translation : " Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)
"

When I finally got it to stay connected long enough I got this speed measurement…

:frowning:

Hello, Any idea ? @Matt_Hartley @nrp

Thanks :3
