Hey peeps!
I’ve noticed in the last few months that my fans don’t turn on nearly as often as before. It used to throttle up and down all day. And now I don’t hear them at all! And my PC has been crashing of freezing. I teach online, so I’m streaming and multitasking with lots of tabs, documents, etc. Was there an update that changed the fans’ behaviour? Or is something messed up?
Btw, I’m not super tech savvy, but I’m willing to learn and take a dive if you can provide instructions.
Sometimes little bits of dust can get into the fan and stop it from turning. Taking the cover off and while still leaving the top cover connected it should be possible to start the laptop and look underneath to see if the fan is spinning at all on the board. A little bit of compressed air can be used gently too.
If the fan has failed it is not terribly hard to replace on Framework. There have been a few reports of the fans toasting themselves, not many though.
If the machine is shutting down because of overheating: in the BIOS there is the ability to limit the number of cores which should keep the heat in check until the repair can be made or the solution to figure out what is going on is discovered. This way the laptop can still be used daily for work and streaming. Let us know how it turns out.
Oh if you have not already, you may wish to start a ticket with support. They are the best resource to help diagnose issues.
Bonjour!
Yeah, I was thinking about taking a look at the fans and see if they were dusty. I guess I’ll do that today. I think the freezing might be because I lack RAM? I have 8GB, which is double what I had on my previous laptop, but is it enough to run Firefox and Google Chrome with multiple tabs in each while streaming and screen sharing? Maybe I should upgrade.
Thanks for the advice! And yes, I’ve already submitted a ticket. Thank you!
Yeah, the RAM usage was pretty high when it froze. I thought doubling my RAM would be enough, but I guess technology or demand moved faster than I thought.
A bit of a waste? Lmao okay! That’s the kind of stuff I don’t really know lol thanks.
Should I order a second 8GB stick or jump to 32GB? (2 sticks of 16GB)
I would definitely get a second stick of something. A couple months ago I would have told you to just swap in a matching set but with the current prices I would just add another stick of whatever you can find for a reasonable price and add it to your existing 8. Just make sure it’s eaither ddr5 4800 or 5600 as the memory controller on the 7x40u seems to dislike anything else.
Holy crap! Prices are insane right now! Yeah, I’ll wait a little. And it’s definitely my RAM. I finally found the monitoring tools and my memory is constantly maxed out. I guess the aluminum case makes a good job of keeping it cool so the fan didn’t start.
