Hey guys,
I have a Framework 12 (i3-1315U 13th Gen Intel) and I’ve been having ongoing issues with external displays over USB-C.
I’ve already installed the latest Windows 11 updates, the newest BIOS, and the latest Framework driver pack.
The problem happens no matter which USB-C port or expansion card I use. Whether it’s an Anker USB-C hub with HDMI/DisplayPort outputs or just a simple portable monitor, I can usually get it working once or twice after a reboot. After that, any attempt to connect an external display fails until I reboot again.
I’ve also noticed some weird stuff in Device Manager. At different times, both USB-C ports have shown Code 43 errors under “UCM-UCSI ACPI Device”, so I’m wondering if it’s related to that.
At this point I’m not sure if this is a driver issue, firmware issue, or hardware issue, but I really need reliable external display support through USB-C hubs and docks.
Has anyone run into this before or have any suggestions on what to check next? This is extremely unstable and it is driving me nuts.
Thanks!
This should work. I would first check the simplest stuff - get a monitor to work without a dock.
- If your monitor has a USB-C input of its own, would you try a laptop to monitor USB-C connection? You’ll need a USB3 or USB4 or Thunderbolt cable for this, I think (USB2 charging cables won’t work).
- If you have an HDMI expansion card in your laptop, try a direct HDMI to monitor connection that way.
If you can try those two things, and report back, people can offer help based on your findings.
hey thanks for the response. The HDMI expansion card actually works fine. But it’s kinda vital that the USB C DP ALT mode does for most of my setups. Of course I have verified I am using name brand usb 3 docks such as Anker and ugreen.
A great start! How about the direct laptop to monitor connection via a USB-C connection on both ends?
(Yes to the docking station - one debugging step at a time).
Directly to the monitor usually works the first time per power cycle of the laptop. Once unplugged, laptop is put to sleep, brought back at a later time (minutes to hours) it won’t detect the monitor again and device manager shows the an issue with the device as stated in the original post as well as an error 43 something along those lines.
Right, super - that is progress. Your docking station won’t work until that is sorted out. Basically, you eliminated a component and the problem still surfaces.
OK, that is interesting. Could you do a full system reboot, connect the laptop and monitor directly via USB-C, unplug, then plug back in? You didn’t mention the sleep in your first post, and I wonder if that is a key part of the problem (i.e. you can keep plugging and unplugging before a sleep, and it will always work).
