About the color, we basically used the raw Aluminum color for laptop. We tried to reduce the toxic production process just only for getting a “colorful laptop”. On the Framework laptop, we tried to limit the process as much as we can by eliminate the “dying color” process during the anodizing, meanwhile keep the sandblasting and anodizing seal process to ensure the quality and durability are prefect without sacrificing the outward appearance. That is why we came out with a silver color, anodized overall looking on the Framework laptop. We valued customer and environment as highest priority than everything else. And I think design should serve to the people and earth instead of overriding them.
Someone help me understand regarding the new 13 Pro’s black frame. Didn’t in the past Framework refuse to have black frames to due to reasons above. That’s why it was only silver frames.
I haven’t seen them go into it yet. There are a few places where people would like to hear more details about the upgrades and changes in the 13 Pro. Perhaps we’ll get a number of “Deep Dive” blog posts, like they’ve done in the past.
Framework has expanded in size, and product line, a lot since the beginning. They might have reached a point where they could get a partner which handles the process responsibly, and at a cost that is manageable.
I look at it from the lifecycle of an entire laptop package (and by extension, at the scale of a product generation)…maybe they’re able to offset the environmental damage at multiple points of manufacturing of the laptop, and maybe recycling process got better…maybe because we don’t use RTC battery anymore? …etc…I don’t know for certain, but I would think they’re not looking at a single point metric.
And, if we go with an assumption (pinch of salt) that if Framework Laptops are more environmentally conscious (than competitions’), and a customer buying a Framework Laptop means one less laptop of the competition being released into the wild, then you’re already ahead by taking up that market share.
Since even the silver pro is anodized now they probably found an anodizing partner they trust not to dump their used chemicals into the nearest nature preserve and also does not charge an arm and a leg. Probably also less of a cost component with a more expensive milled option.
Or they determined the extra durability from being anodized beats the environmental impact from doing it. There is at least one example of someone sweating holes in the untreated alu chasis.
Would be a weird justification, macbooks are anodized. More of a bootleg elitebook aestetic anyway.
