[Framework 13 + Razer Core X eGPU] parallel powering the framework possible?

Hey there!

I use a framework 13 with Win11 Pro 64Bit for a while now, and just got an razer core x eGPU for it, and this does work just fine.

Right now its basically only the razer core x connected via thunderbolt 3 cable to the framework, and this is also powering the framework.

In Windows i can now say to eject the eGPU if i dont need it, and it cuts the connection to the directly attached displays as it should.
But it still powers my framework and dont really shuts down the GPU. The GPU just rests in idle, still chucking about 40-50W alone though.

Could i just directly power the framwork over another usb-c-poweradapter that then powers the laptop, and turn the razer core x off with the switch on it?

Or is that a problem for the framework when it gets power through two different usb-c-ports?
(im thinking a) about not damaging the hardware of course and b) if when the framework gets power through two ports, its automatically uses both and then is ok with one going “offline”, or using one and if that’s gone switches to the next one there)

It’s not a problem, but the Framework will only take power though one port at a time, probably the first one connected or the one that supplies the highest power.

While testing around with multiple DP powersources i had the RTC/CMOS battery die on me, and since this is an intel 11th gen i ran into the “will only blink but do nothing else” situation.

Thankfully this was documented a lot in this forum how to resolve.

Now on to further testing.

If anyone is interested in the complete solution to this all:

  • I now start the framework mainboard with a normal 65W USB-C-Power Adapter.
  • If i want to game i simply turn on the razer X eGPU-Case; this then doesnt power the framework, if i pull the 65W USB-C-Adapter the framework goes instantly into sleep
  • if im down with gaming and want back to work, i “eject” the eGPU through amd adrenaline (i heard you can do the same with nvidia), and turn the Razer X eGPU-Case off

For displays i use 3 displays: they are connected over a KVM to a small usb-c-dock to the framework, and in parallel over the other ports of the KVM directly to the display-outs of the Razer X eGPU.
So i can switch between displays directly over the framework when im working, OR displays directly over the eGPU when im gaming. That´s because you lose a lot of frames if you go to eGPU and back out through the framework.

I hope that helps someone, and cheers!
