Framework 16 New 5070 module not used in games (Nobara Linux + Steam + Helldivers 2)

Which Linux distro are you using? Nobara

Which release version? Latest, as of Dec 26 2025

Which kernel are you using? 6.18.2

Which BIOS version are you using? IFGP6.03.05

Which Framework Laptop 16 model are you using? Ryzen™ 7 7840HS - 180W Power Adapter

I just received the 5070 graphics module. Drivers are installed, game loads, etc. However, regardless of whether the NVIDIA adaptor is selected in Helldivers, it appears to continue to use the iGPU. I realized that that power adaptor may be the problem, so I just purchased the 240W version.

Questions

  • Does the power adaptor matter in regards to whether the adaptor can be used?
  • Do I need to update my firmware to support this new module? (where it appropriately switches to the discrete over iGPU)

If the adaptor matters, I really wish that was made more obvious when purchasing the module. It should show a warning that the module will require 240W in order to reach max performance.

I’ll update the firmware to see if that helps (if it’s out of date)

I feel as if nvtop is gaslighting me.

When I use nvtop, I see that the 5070 is being 100% utilized. When I switch the adaptor (in HD2) to AMD, it still shows the 5070 as 100% utilized. I am getting the same exact FPS when I was running on AMD w/o the 5070. This makes me believe that nvtop is lying or the 5070 is being throttled because of the 180W brick.

If I can get confirmation that this is true (it’s being throttled), I’ll revisit this thread when I get the 240W brick.

I’ve notice, albeit occasionally, that in game overlays prevent graphics switching. Might be worth a shot of you use one( steam discord etc)

You need to be on BIOS 4.02 to use the NVIDEA board, and you are on 3.05.

Incredible! I’ll try that!

I am shocked by how easy that was to upgrade the FW. I’m using Linux and used the built-in tool described in these docs https://knowledgebase.frame.work/en_us/framework-laptop-16-bios-and-driver-releases-amd-ryzen-7040-series-BkeqkVovp.

Upgrading the firmware solved my problem.

Thanks for your help, all!
