Framework Laptop 13 Convertible / 2-in-1 with full performance and expandability

Hello Framework team,

I’m a very happy follower of your mission and a future customer (though hopefully not too soon – my current hardware still works!).

I would like to suggest a Convertible / 2-in-1 version of the Framework Laptop 13 as a future product.

:glowing_star: Why I think this would be great:

  • Many users want to use their laptop as a second screen next to a desktop monitor, e.g. in presentation or tent mode.
  • A convertible 13" fits perfectly for mobile work, creative use and media consumption – without needing a separate tablet.
  • Touch + stylus support would add huge versatility for both creative and technical users.

:glowing_star: Why 13" and not 12" or 16

  • I always carry my laptop with me – a 16" device is simply too large for this use case.
  • At the same time, I need full expandability (e.g. at least one 4 TB M.2 SSD slot) and strong performance for demanding projects (music production, video, programming).
  • I use this device for everything: on stage (where I need Windows for certain software), in the office, and on the go (where I primarily use Linux).
  • So it’s important that the laptop does not thermal-throttle or downclock under load – I need reliable performance even under pressure on stage.

:glowing_star: What matters most:

  • Keep the current modularity and repairability philosophy.
  • Compatible with existing expansion cards and parts where possible.
  • High quality touch display, ideally matte or with a good anti-reflective coating.
  • Full-size M.2 slot(s) for large SSDs (≥ 4 TB).

I know this would be a long-term project, but I wanted to add this to your list of potential future product ideas.

Thank you for everything you do for repairability and open hardware!

A 2-in-1 chassis and that is mostly compatible with existing parts for the Framework 13 platform would be very very cool – but I’m not sure there’s an audience, at least not with the Framework 12 satisfying 99% of people who want a 2-in-1.

Plus, I bet 4TB 2230s will hit the market at some point (if they’re not already here at some impractical price point)
