Framework Laptop 13 - Screen flickering

I just recieved my Framework 13 Laptop (DIY) and I am experiencing some issues with screen flickering. The screen flickering is insane pre OS start but occational flickers occur when things happen on screen (like opening up a new app or closing).

After a while it settles and the screen flickering is not that bad in OS. But as soon as I connect my charger it starts to flicker like crazy, I have also had the laptop freeze when I connect the charger for extended periods. I have seen some posts about this happening to more people. Any suggestions?

I got the Framework Laptop 13 AMD (Ryzen 7040)

I am running the latest BIOS

I have done some troubleshooting by adding kernel parameters that I’ve seen other people do but nothing has solved the problem.

  1. amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10
  2. amdgpu.abmlevel=0
  3. usbcore.autosuspend=-1

I was also thinking it could be something wrong with the display cable so I reseated the connector but this did not solve anything. Physical tilt of the display does not make things worse or better. It seems to be correlated to rendering things. So my assessment atm is that its not anything physical with the display cable being broken or damaged. But I could ofc be wrong.

Similar issue with my Framework 13 running Debian Trixie. Tried the same kernel parameters without success.

The flickering happens only on the internal display. There is no flickering when I connect the laptop to an external monitor.

By flickering, do you mean the actual contents of the display change? For example, you’re looking at your wallpaper that’s a photo of your dog or cat, and it disappears to a black screen, then comes back?

OR, do you mean flickering how it happens on my FW13, which is: the contents of the display stay the same, but the white LED backlight goes dim for a few fractions of a second, then returns to its normal brightness, repeating for a few whole seconds?

I managed to fix this on my Fedora KDE system by changing “Color accuracy” (in Display & Monitor in the KDE Settings) from “Prefer efficiency” to “Prefer color accuracy”.

I don’t know why that fixed it, but it did!

Oh yeah, and I have updated the BIOS to the latest version.

sometimes i have similar kind of problem but, its not flikering , when i scroll down on a long web page very fast, some times i see a half of the screen in red colour , i dont know why does happen

Howdy all,

Screen flicker issues are something that have been a long standing issue on our radar for AMD platforms. Right now, the leading cause of this is meant to be fixed with patches included in kernel 7.0, but if you’re already on kernel 7.0 or higher and still having screen flickering issues, I would strongly suggest reporting the issues upstream to AMD to follow up on the related issue and possibly in our Software and Firmware Issue Tracker.

Unfortunately this is a bit of a hard issue to dive into otherwise because it’s not easy to reliably trigger or capture. Any users experiencing screen flickering in the BIOS though, I would suggest opening up a support case because that is almost certainly a deeper issue.
