Framework Laptop 16 – Fan Noise and Overheating After Bluetooth Issue and System Repairs

Hello Community,

I recently assembled my Framework Laptop 16 (DIY Edition) with the following specs:

Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS with Radeon 780M Graphics
RAM: 32 GB (Framework)
Operating System: Windows 11 (all updates installed)

After setting it up and installing all the drivers (Framework driver pack, Windows updates, and AMD Adrenalin software), everything worked perfectly. I could play games like GTA 5 on high graphics settings without the laptop overheating or the fans even turning on.

However, on day 4, I encountered an issue when trying to connect my AirPods Pro via Bluetooth, which caused a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Bluetooth worked fine with other devices before and after, but every time I tried connecting my AirPods Pro, I got a BSOD. I tried checking for new Bluetooth drivers and ran System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Imaging Service and Management Tool (DISM), which replaced some system files.

The next day, I noticed the laptop became louder during boot. When I tried playing GTA 5 again, the fans immediately kicked in at full speed, and the laptop became hot, even though this didn’t happen before. Lowering the graphics settings didn’t help—now, the fans are loud and the laptop heats up quickly during gaming.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far, but nothing seems to fix the issue:

  1. Reinstalled all drivers (Framework driver pack, Windows updates, AMD Adrenalin).
  2. Reinstalled Windows and all drivers.
  3. Switched BIOS settings between “Gaming” and “Normal” mode, but saw no change.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with fan noise and overheating after a BSOD or system repairs? Any advice on how I can get the laptop back to its original state, where it ran cool and quiet, even under load?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Can you check your temps with a monitoring software like HWiNFO?

And try to measure how long it takes for the laptop to heat up as well as posting a screenshot of HWiNFO after playing for a while. If there are overheating issues, then contact support for a parts replacement.

My Framework heated up to around the high 90s after less than a minute when running heavy loads so it may be normal behavior, though my Framework was experiencing overheating issues.

Does the performance seem to have changed, other than the fans? Is the framerate the same in GTA 5?

I don’t think the cause is the BSOD.

Can you try and run a stress test?
